WWE ‘NXT TakeOver: Toronto’ Results — Asuka Taps Out Mickie James; Samoa Joe And #DIY Win Titles

For the first NXT special since TakeOver: Brooklyn II in August, WWE’s developmental program debuted in Canada for NXT TakeOver: Toronto, one night before the 30th annual WWE Survivor Series. Shinsuke Nakamura will put up the NXT Championship in a rematch against Samoa Joe, while Mickie James made her first official NXT appearance by challenging Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship. The NXT Tag Team Championship was defended by The Revival while The Authors of Pain and TM-61 competed in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. And Bobby Roode was in singles action against Tye Dillinger.

NXT TakeOver: Toronto Preview

This will be the fifth consecutive TakeOver event headlined by Samoa Joe. He battled Finn Balor at TakeOver: London and Dallas, both losing efforts for Joe. At NXT TakeOver: The End, Joe finally defeated Finn for the title in a Steel Cage Match. Then, at Brooklyn II, Joe dropped the title to Shinsuke Nakamura. With both men clearly headed for the main roster in the not-so-distant future, this rematch will likely be one chapter in a storied rivalry that could grow to be as epic as Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart.

Mickie James, who hasn’t competed inside a WWE ring since 2010, makes her return by challenging the undefeated NXT Women’s Champion Asuka. James, a former WWE Women’s and WWE Divas Champion, will try to do what no else in NXT has been able to do. If Mickie James can’t stop Asuka, who will NXT give her next?

The Revival will be at 165 days as NXT Tag Team Champions if they can get past #DIY at NXT TakeOver. They currently have the third-longest reign as NXT tag champs, just passing their first reign of 162 days. In a Two-Out-Of-Three Falls Match, can “Johnny Wrestling” Gargano and Tommaso “Psycho Killer” Ciampa earn their first taste of NXT gold?

In other tag team action, Paul Ellering’s Authors of Pain face TM-61 in the finals of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. Because of Ellering’s interference in recent matches, he will hang in a shark cage above the ring. For longtime WWE fans, this will almost certainly conjure up memories of Paul Bearer circa 1996.

The fifth match booked for NXT TakeOver: Toronto is Bobby Roode vs. Tye Dillinger. Having the most popular theme song and entrance on the roster hasn’t hurt Roode’s transition from TNA to NXT. After feigning interest in winning the Dusty Rhodes Classic and turning on his partner Tye Dillinger, the “Glorious” one faces the “Perfect 10” in a battle of two Ontario-born wrestlers in front of their countrymen.
