‘The Walking Dead’: Andrew Lincoln Says Rick Grimes Is ‘Shattered’ And ‘Smashed’ – Is There Hope For Alexandria In ‘TWD’? [Spoilers]
The Walking Dead Season 7 featured a new villain, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and a few other Alexandrians had to watch as Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) and Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) had their brains bashed in with a barbed wire baseball bat nicknamed Lucille. Negan was determined to break Rick, and it appears that it finally happened. In an interview, Lincoln said that Grimes is “shattered” and “smashed.” Is there any hope for this character? Does he have a plan up his sleeve? Will Alexandria regain its independence?
TWD spoilers are ahead. Do not continue reading if you don’t want to know what to expect on the zombie apocalypse drama.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Jeffrey Dean Morgan doesn’t excuse what Negan did to Glenn and Abraham. However, The Walking Dead actor did explain that Rick and his group killed more than 20 Saviors and Negan has only killed two in retaliation. This statement certainly won’t sit well with fans who are still mourning Glenn and Abraham’s deaths.
In the latest issue of TV Guide, Andrew Lincoln spoke about his character, Rick Grimes, and what he is going through mentally. Viewers were confident that Rick was going to come up with a plan to defeat Negan and the Saviors. However, it seems that he is giving up and allowing the supervillain to take charge. What does the TWD actor have to say about his character?
“I asked Scott [Gimple] if I should be playing Rick with maybe a glimmer of hope or a sense of resistance or perhaps even a hint that he has something up his sleeve. The answer was an unequivocal ‘No! The man is shattered. The man is smashed.'”
However, not everyone is satisfied to let Negan take control. As seen in the Season 7 premiere, there are a few who want to fight back. With that being said, there are others who will flee to the Hilltop Colony for safety. Unfortunately, Simon, one of the Saviors, arrives at the community with a group of men, according to the synopsis for next Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead.

Showrunner Scott Gimple also had some things to say about Negan and Rick Grimes.
“The relationship between these two men can in no way be called a rivalry. Rick was a powerful and relentless leader, capable of surmounting every obstacle, who collided with an immovable force. Now, he must adjust to life as Negan’s servant.”
As for Daryl Dixon, played by Norman Reedus, The Walking Dead character is being kept a prisoner by Negan and the Saviors at the Sanctuary. He is trying not to give in and become one of the Saviors. The showrunner teased that soon, Daryl will start interacting with people outside the Sanctuary. Last week, Dixon helped load things into trucks, but did not interact.
Even though some fans think he was sending Rick a message, it is unlikely Daryl even knows Morse Code considering his background and upbringing. There is also the fact that Daryl has learned that Negan isn’t a dumb villain. He notices things, and if Dixon tried anything, Negan could kill his friends in retaliation. Daryl already feels guilty enough and won’t let that happen.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the next few episodes of The Walking Dead. Even though things for Alexandria seem dreary now, there is always hope. In Robert Kirkman’s comic books, that hope comes from Ezekiel (Khary Payton) and the Kingdom. Perhaps the storyline on the television show will be similar, which could give Alexandria back some of its independence and free will.
What do you think of what Andrew Lincoln had to say about Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead? Is there hope for the TWD character? Will Alexandria be able to get out from under Negan’s thumb?
