‘Sons Of Anarchy’ Spin-Off ‘Mayans MC’ Confirmed By FX, Charlie Hunnam And Ryan Hurst Set To Return?
It’s official. After months of speculation, FX has finally confirmed Kurt Sutter’s Sons of Anarchy spin-off, Mayans MC. While fans are undoubtedly excited about re-visiting Sutter’s biker world, will Charlie Hunnam and Ryan Hurst return as Jax and Opie?
Celeb Dirty Laundry reports that the network has officially given Sutter the green light to move forward with the new series. The show, titled Mayans MC, is expected to premiere sometime in the fall of next year. Sutter has not announced when production will start, though he is in the process of script development.
Mayans MC will explore similar themes as Sons of Anarchy, focusing on strong family ties within the biker community. The only difference is the new series will be darker and more violent than SOA and set within the Latino community. Few casting announcements have been made.
“Darker, a deep-rooted family drama that will showcase the Latino voice,” Sutter previously revealed.
The biggest question surrounding the spin-off is exactly when it will take place within the Sons of Anarchy timeline. The new series could begin in the early days of SAMCRO when Jackson “Jax” Teller and Harry “Opie” Winston were young, or much later, either during or after the events in SOA. This time frame will largely determine whether or not Hunnam and Hurst reprise their roles.
Of course, fans would go crazy if Hunnam and Hurst returned for the spin-off, and Sutter has been messing with the idea ever since he announced his plans for the show. Recently, the creator shared an image of Hunnam and Emilio Rivera, who plays the president of the Mayans MC, on social media. The photo sparked new hope that Hunnam will return as Jax next year.
While fans wait to learn more about the spin-off, Sutter is working alongside Elgin James on Mayans MC. Sutter brought James on board because of his history as a Latino gang member and his work on the films, Lowriders and Little Birds. James will work as Sutter’s voice for the Latino community and is serving as the co-creator.
As far as casting is concerned, iTech Post reports that Rivera will reprise his role as Marcus Alvarez in the spin-off. The actor broke the exciting news on social media in the middle of Sutter’s outrage with the recent Presidential elections.
In fact, while Donald Trump was named President-elect, Sutter took to social media to express his disappointment with how the election turned out. Although Sutter was unhappy with Trump’s election, he assured fans that he wouldn’t let it get him down. There’s no telling if Sutter will incorporate some of these issues into Mayans MC, but fans can expect a more positive outlook from the SOA creator.
“So for my own sanity and in the spirit of hope for my kids and all citizens of the world, I promise to look for the similarities rather than the differences. And instead of complaining about beliefs and policies I don’t think are right, I will try to put that energy into something productive that incites change rather than derisiveness,” Sutter shared.
The Mayans were an integral part of Sons of Anarchy. According to Movie Pilot, the motorcycle club rivaled SAMCRO early in the series, but later established a working relationship with the club and agreed to a peace that ended a longstanding war.
Although many of characters in Sons of Anarchy died before the show ended — including Jax and Opie — Alvarez and the president of the Stockton chapter, Oscar “El Oso” Ramos (Ivo Nandi) survived the carnage. Alvarez’s involvement in the spin-off suggests that Sutter will place the show during or after the events in SOA instead of before. Thankfully, this opens the door for some surprise cameos from the original cast members.
Will Hunnam return as Jax Teller?
Hunnam’s character died during the Season 7 finale of SOA. If Mayans MC takes place after these events, then Comic Book reports the only way Hunnam could return is in the form of a flashback. If the spin-off occurs during Jax Teller’s days as president of SAMCRO, then fans can expect a few cameo appearances.
Even still, with the focus being on the Latino community, cameos from SOA characters will not be a prominent feature of the spin-off. Of course, fans will still be excited to see some of their favorite characters in action, even if their appearances are short lived.
As far as Hurst is concerned, there’s no telling if he will make a cameo in Mayans MC. Following his exit from Sons of Anarchy, the actor moved on to other projects and is currently working on a show for WGN America.
According to Comic Book, Hurst stars in Outsiders, a show about a close-knit family who live in the mountains of Kentucky. Hurst plays Lil Foster Farrell in the series and still has his long hair and beard from his days on SOA.
Production for Mayans MC is currently underway, so fans can expect more updates to come.
