The mid-season finale of Season 4 of History’s Vikings showed Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) return to Kattegat after many years of self-inflicted isolation. Many people in his village did not even know if he was alive or dead. However, when he did return, he taunted his sons to take over his leadership. At any moment, one of his sons could have and a battle to the death would have ensured.

It seems this did not occur in the Season 4 return of Vikings according to the new trailer released by Entertainment Weekly. However, that does not mean Ragnar is no longer in danger. The clip below shows Ragnar travelling alone on horseback. Spying a tree, he decides he has had enough with being king and throws a rope up over a branch. He then attempts to kill himself. It is unclear whether Ragnar is successful or not, as the Season 4 trailer ends before viewers can find out Ragnar’s fate. You can view the clip below.

But what is the likelihood of Ragnar dying this way in the Season 4 return of Vikings?

According to the many sources surrounding the sagas of the Vikings, Ragnar did not actually die this way. There are two variations of how he did die though. One of which will not eventuate in History’s Vikings.

According to Norman Descendants, one version has Ragnar dying as a result of complications from battle-inflicted wounds and something akin to dysentery or cholera at the massive battle at Paris viewers saw in Season 3 of Vikings.

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica website, the other version of Ragnar’s death occurs in a skaldic poem entitled “Krakumal.” In this instance, Ragnar’s death occurs at the hands of King Aelle. He manages to capture Ragnar and throw him into a pit of snakes. Ragnar’s sons, upon hearing of this, avenge their father’s death and the Great Heathen Army that attacks England in AD 865.

Over the years, History’s Vikings has shown many deviations from the history of the Vikings, so it is entirely possible this could happen with Ragnar’s storyline. However, regardless of how Ragnar dies, Vikings creator Michael Hirst has previously stated via the Hollywood Reporter that there was still plenty of Ragnar’s story to be told in Season 4 of Vikings.
