Tony Romo Press Conference: ‘Dak Prescott Has Earned The Right’

Tony Romo gave a press conference on November 15, addressing his position and status with the Dallas Cowboys. Here are the highlights.

Romo has been a valuable part of the Dallas Cowboys for years. However, given his recent injury, he understands that the situation is bigger than himself.

And, while he’d love nothing more than to get back on the field, Tony Romo stated in the press conference that he has Prescott’s back.

No Questions, Please

Once Romo entered the room, you could hear cameras clicking and lights flashing. Simultaneously, you could hear press members attempting to ask Tony a few questions.

So, he addressed it before it became an issue.

According to Romo, he only agreed to give the press conference in order to make a statement and nothing more.

“I really just came up here to talk to you guys. I wrote something…that I really just wanted to read. I know you all have a lot of questions…I’m not going to take any questions, but hopefully I answer most of them with what I’m saying here.”

According to Tony Romo, his statement and decision is “for the best interest of the team,” as can be seen from the video on the Dallas Cowboys’ official website.

“To say the first half of this season has been ’emotional’ would be a huge understatement. Getting hurt, when you felt like this was the best team you’ve ever had, was a soul-crushing moment for me.”

Tony Romo mentioned that his injury status has been flexible, much to his disadvantage. And, through it all, Romo noted that he has a tremendous amount of guilt.

According to the Dallas Cowboys quarterback, he feels like he’s letting his team and fans down by not being active in the current season.

However, at the same time, Tony Romo expressed that Dak Prescott has more than excelled on the field and has “earned the right to be the quarterback” for Dallas.

“That’s when you come face-to-face with what’s happening. Seasons are fleeting. Games become more precious. Chances for success diminish. Your potential successor has arrived.”

The Season Goes On, With Or Without Tony Romo

Romo is aware of what’s happening. Although he’s a veteran in the sport, there comes a time when the torch has to be passed.

As Tony Romo mentioned in the press conference speech, “coaches are sympathetic, but they still have to coach.”

The Dallas Cowboys’ coaches are not the only ones sympathetic to Romo’s situation, the fans are as well.

However, at the same time, the fans understand — like the coaches — that the season must continue.

And, right now — whether to Tony Romo’s benefit or detriment — Dak Prescott is definitely handling business on the football field, according to the NFL website.

“It’s in this moment that you find out who you really are and what you’re really about. You see, football’s a meritocracy. You aren’t handed anything. You earn everything. Every single day, over and over again. You have to prove it. That’s the way the NFL…the way that football works.”

“A great example of this is Dak Prescott,” Tony Romo continued. “He’s earned the right to be our quarterback. As hard as that is for me to say, he’s earned that right.”

Romo expressed that it’s difficult to achieve the current record that Prescott has held with the team.

Right now, the team’s morale is high — as well as that of the fans. Tony Romo recognizes that, given his state, he doesn’t need to attempt to jump back in because of personal conflicts.

For Romo, it’s now about the bigger picture.

And that’s being a team player.
