People Across The Country Flood Pro-Life Mike Pence With Planned Parenthood Donation Alerts

A bunch of creative people committed to letting pro-life Vice President-elect Mike Pence know what they think of his idea to defund Planned Parenthood, overturn Roe v. Wade, and remove the employer-funded birth control mandate are making donations to Planned Parenthood in his name and making sure that he gets a certificate each time they do.

Soon after the election, Mike Pence confirmed the intention of the Trump/Pence administration to allow employers to refuse to pay for birth control, says the Inquisitr. Pence says that he is a Christian first, and he believes that employers should not be forced to cover things that they object to on religious grounds. Pence says he also wants to abolish the protections transgendered people have to choose their preferred bathroom. Throughout the election, both Trump and Pence said that they have real issues with a woman’s right to choose and would like to overturn Roe v. Wade.

What did some people decide to give the vice president-elect? A donation to Planned Parenthood in his name, of course, says Bustle, “which will make you cackle with feminist joy. There might be rough seas ahead for reproductive rights, but many people are doing something to put a smug smile on their face. The next four years are certainly going to be tough for women’s healthcare, but at least there’s an opportunity for some poetic justice to be served.”

Mike Pence has real issues with Planned Parenthood dating back to 2007 when he sponsored a bill to defund the organization, as the evangelical Christian is a “strong anti-abortion advocate.” He continued to push such legislation until 2011, when the house of representatives passed a bill blocking Federal funds, but the bill failed in the Senate.

As the governor of Indiana, he passed laws restricting access to abortion and slashed Planned Parenthood’s funding, which caused five Planned Parenthood clinics to close in the state. This closure was linked to an HIV outbreak on one of the counties that lost its Planned Parenthood clinic.

After the election, Planned Parenthood’s president, Cecile Richards, released a statement saying that the organization will continue with its mission.

“We will never back down and we will never stop fighting to ensure that Planned Parenthood patients have access to the care they need.”

So Planned Parenthood will likely have to survive on donations, but some people are taking this a step further and making a donation in Mike Pence’s name.

“It’s a win-win: Planned Parenthood receives money that helps them stay open, and you get the satisfaction of donating to a cause that Pence actively works against.”

The donations go to Mike Pence when one selects the “In Honor Of” button on the home page for Planned Parenthood. The information could then be filled out with the vice president-elect’s name and address. A certificate, suitable for framing, will be sent to Vice President-elect Pence.

But are people really going through with it and donating their hard-earned money to support Planned Parenthood and shame Mike Pence? Yes, according to USA Today. Cecile Richards says they have received “an unprecedented outpouring of support.”

Another similar idea was floated by HBO’s John Oliver, who suggested donating in the name of Mike Pence and Donald Trump to the NAACP, Center for Reproductive Rights, the Southern Poverty Law Center, or the Anti-Defamation League.
