Luke Perry’s Tribute To His ‘90210’ Costar Shannen Doherty Will Leave Dylan And Brenda Shippers In Tears

Luke Perry sent out a heartfelt message to Beverly Hills 90210 alum Shannen Doherty over the weekend. Perry joined other 90210 cast members at the RewindCon in Bloomingdale, Illinois and paid tribute to his onscreen romance, who was unable to attend because of her battle with cancer.

According to Us Magazine, Perry told fans that one person was noticeably absent from the 90210 reunion, leaving Dylan and Brenda shippers in tears.

“None of us are up here today without Shannen,” the ’90s star shared. “She’s been through a lot. She’s not doing well right now but sometimes her contributions are minimized. She’s been thrown under the bus. I’ve been accused of driving it. But she’s a very big part of the success of this show. She taught me a lot. I’m glad she was my scene partner. She was great at what she did in the character with me.”

Yahoo is reporting that Tori Spelling, Jennie Garth, Jason Priestly, Vincent Young, Christine Elise, and Gabrielle Carteris were all in attendance at the event. Doherty has been fighting breast cancer since February of last year. Although she didn’t make her diagnosis known until August of 2015, the actress has kept fans informed of her progress on social media.

“I think what’s beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down and builds you, and tears you down and builds you,” Doherty shared during an interview with Chelsea Handler in October. “It remakes you so many different times. The person I thought I was supposed to be or was going to be or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different.”

Doherty and Perry played Brenda and Dylan on the hit ’90s show. According to Wet Paint, the characters were an on-again, off-again couple until Doherty’s exit after Season 4.

Luke Perry wasn’t alone in expressing his gratitude to Doherty. Garth took to Instagram after the event and expressed her support for Doherty’s continued fight against breast cancer. Garth wore a t-shirt supporting breast cancer for the event, with the words “Fight Like a Brenda” written on the front.

“my soul sister @theshando strongest lady i’ve ever known,” Garth wrote. “then and now. i used to be threatened by your spirit, now i’m in awe of it. you’ve taught me a lot about speaking my mind and not being afraid of my power. i’m so grateful that young me got to be friends with you. but especially “old” me! the best is yet to come on this crazy journey!! love you!”

People is reporting that Doherty just began another treatment of chemotherapy this past August. The actress opened up about her battle during the American Cancer Society’s Inaugural Giants of Science Gala on Saturday and even offered Michael Bublé a word of advice in dealing with his son’s cancer.

“Stay positive,” Doherty shared. “That positivity, that outlook on life that you can get through something, it actually does get you through.”

In addition to the kind words from the 90210 alums, Doherty was given an award for her achievements earlier this month by Sarah Michelle Gellar. After receiving the award, Doherty admitted that “cancer has changed my life for the better.”

“I’m feeling ridiculously lucky and very blessed,” she explained. “Cancer has changed my life for the better. It’s made me a better human being. It stripped away all of the walls and the barriers.”

While Doherty continues her fight against breast cancer, Huffington Post is reporting that Perry made headlines after appearing on the front cover of AARP Magazine. That’s right, the former teenage crush is now part of the 50-and-over crowd.

A rep of AARP has since revealed that Perry is not on the actually cover of the magazine. Instead, the photo op was done in good fun to celebrate Perry’s 50th birthday. Even still, many fans were shocked by the fact that Dylan McKay is now a member of the AARP.

“Don’t know what makes me feel older,” one fan wrote on social media. “That Luke Perry is on cover of AARP magazine; or that younger coworker had never heard of Luke Perry.”

“You just made a whole generation of people who thought they were still young very depressed,” another fan added.

Just to put Perry’s mugshot on AARP in perspective, the actor was named as being blessed with the “sexiest eyes” by fans back in 1991. Of course, AARP hit back at fans who were feeling a little depressed about Perry’s age.

“Who says aging is a bad thing?” the company responded on Twitter.

Perry has not responded to the AARP cover or commented on how fans reacted to his 50th birthday.
