‘Paranormal Activity 5’ And Latino Spinoff Headed To Theaters

Paranormal Activity 5 and a Latino spinoff are reportedly in the works, according to Cinema Blend. After earning nearly $30 million at the American box office over the weekend, Paramount Pictures has decided to green light both a sequel and a spinoff.

Since the franchise continues to be such a huge success for the studio, it’s not overly surprisingly that executives are eager to get another sequel in production as quickly as possible. However, the fact that the Latino spinoff is currently scheduled to hit theaters in no less than five months is a little crazy. Apparently producers are firm believes of striking while the iron is hot.

Deadline is reporting that Christopher Landon, son of Little House on the Prairie star Michael Landon and writer of the 2007 box office his Disturbia, has been tapped to direct the aforementioned spinoff. In addition to featuring a number of Latino actors and actresses, the film will be partially filmed in Spanish.

“This will be an off-shoot aimed at the groups who have been the biggest supporters of the property — Latinos and folks in Latin America — Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina,” a studio insider recently explained.

What a lot of Paranormal Activity fans may not realize is that the franchise has already been spun off in the Japanese market. Writer-director Toshikazu Nagae’s 2010 cinematic effort Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night explored what happened when someone associated with the American stories returns to Japan with the curse in tow. The film, which has yet to be released in the United States, essentially offers up more of the same in terms of set-up and execution.

Paranormal Activity 5 is presently slated to arrive in theaters next year. Considering Paramount Pictures has had quite a bit of success with the franchise around Halloween, expect the next installment to land around the same time in 2013.
