‘The Vampire Diaries’ Season 8: Sybil Manipulates Stefan Salvatore – Can Siren Still Use Mind Control In ‘TVD’? [Spoilers]
The Vampire Diaries Season 8 features a new big bad. It is a siren that goes by the name of Sybil, portrayed by Nathalie Kelley. Even though she was captured last Friday, that isn’t the end of the story. Especially since Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) still seems to be affected by her. There is some confusion on if the siren still has mind control powers. In an interview, Kelley explained what is going on with the villain now and what else to expect.
TVD spoilers are ahead. If you don’t want to know what is going to happen next, then do not continue reading.
As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Nathalie Kelley spoke to Alloy Entertainment about Sybil’s sister and her backstory. In a new interview with TV Guide, the actress talked about Sybil and Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). She also revealed if the siren still has mind control powers or not.
At the end of The Vampire Diaries Season 8, Episode 3, Sybil was inside a room at the Armory, huddled on a bed. She seemed powerless, but a sneak peek seemed to indicate that she might still have her mind control powers. This was confusing to fans. So, does she still have her powers or not? According to her interview with TV Guide, she can’t control minds anymore. However, that doesn’t mean that she is powerless. She is a master manipulator and Stefan is her next target.
“She only has one mode of operation and that’s manipulation. Actually, in this episode, she reveals quite a bit about herself. She reveals how she became a siren, you find out about her backstory. Her and Stefan have a really long chat and in this reveal. She’s really also trying to reveal something about Stefan to himself. In a way, the reveal is like a manipulation. She wouldn’t be telling him her backstory if it didn’t serve her.”
Not much is known about Sybil’s past, but it was revealed that viewers will go back thousands of years in Episode 4. It turns out that there was a tragedy that occurred that turned Sybil into a villain. However, she isn’t having Damon and Enzo kill people for her own amusement. It is a task that was assigned to the siren. To put it simply, it is her job.
Even though Sybil was captured in The Vampire Diaries, Damon Salvatore is not free. He told Stefan there was still work to be done and he took off to Texas. If he is no longer being controlled by Sybil, then why is he still doing her dirty work? That was not revealed, but it seems that Sybil replacing his memories might have something to do with it. Damon is on a mission and as it was explained in a previous episode, Sybil and Damon’s minds became fused. This is why he has conversations with Sybil in his head even though she was captured.
Regarding Stefan Salvatore, why does Sybil reveal so much to him in tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries? The actress explained that there are a lot of parallels between Damon and Stefan’s relationship and Sybil’s relationship with her sister. The siren asks Stefan a lot of deep questions that bring up old issues and force him to face himself.
As for Sybil’s motivations, it has to do with love and companionship. She doesn’t like Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) because people love her by choice. Sybil has never had that. She can only get people to love her by controlling their minds. Nathalie Kelley also revealed that the siren had a lot of abandonment as a child.
“You find out there was a lot of abandonment she experienced as a child, so I think that’s what really drives her — to mask those old wounds. And she masks them by sirening people to do her bidding, and she’s sirening Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) partially for the company too. She had this tragic past and then she was in this prison for 100 years in the Armory, so she’s desperate for love and companionship at this point. She’s really yearning for it.”
Prior to The Vampire Diaries Season 8 premiere, executive producer Julie Plec teased that villains are often humanized. She said this big bad would be no different. Based on what Nathalie Kelley had to say, TVD fans might understand Sybil’s pain a little more. However, that doesn’t excuse what she is doing to Damon and Enzo.
What do you think of what Nathalie Kelley had to say about Sybil in The Vampire Diaries? Season 8, Episode 4 airs tonight on The CW network.
