‘The Fall’ Is The Best Netflix Series You Probably Aren’t Watching Yet

If you haven’t yet watched the Netflix series The Fall, you are missing out on possibly one of the best modern mystery and intrigue series around with Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan in the starring roles, each delivering an engrossing performance. If you know and like Dornan from 50 Shades of Grey, The Fall will increase your appreciation ten fold.

Netflix is continuing to deliver some of the best viewing around, and best original shows from a streaming service, says the Inquisitr. Just this week, Netflix launched its most expensive series yet with The Crown, which follows the path of Queen Elizabeth from the day of her wedding to Prince Philip, and on, with lush scenery from London to Scotland and on to Malta. The full first season of The Crown was launched on Friday, with additional seasons promised.

The Fall, available on Netflix and BBC is a series which spans three seasons of “fascination, madness, and obsession, according to The Atlantic. Gillian Anderson, possibly known best in this country for The X Files, plays Stella Gibson, an Irish police detective on the hunt for a brilliant and dark serial killer, played by Jamie Dornan. The Fall has now come to an end with its third season, and even in its finale, it doesn’t disappoint.

The Fall is all about good and evil, with Anderson as Stella as the good, the light, while Dornan, as Paul, wears black, and Ninja-like, he skulks around in the dark, doing evil deeds. By day, Paul is a family man, and by night, a serial killer, trying to silence women in a manner that seems beyond his control. Paul is compelled to not only kill, but to reach out to Stella to rub her face in the fact that for all of her singular effort, she cannot trap him.

It’s hard to imagine, as most mysteries on television, like Criminal Minds, wrap up serial crime in an hour, using the same formula each week with little deviation, that chasing one serial killer could take three seasons, but The Fall never drags on. Dornan made you loathe and pity Paul in equal measure, as the viewer continues to wonder if he is at all redeemable.

The Atlantic says that in this role, Gillian Anderson’s Stella is almost a feminist icon, able to maintain some level of softness in a harsh masculine world. While Stella tries to push down any emotion or sense of feeling, she seethes, drawing viewers in even more, just waiting for a scrap. In one scene, Stella explains to a young police woman that they cannot let their chosen line of work defeat them.

“We’ve chosen to work in a masculine, paramilitary, patriarchal culture. Let’s not let it beat us.”

The Vulture explains that even beyond the two main characters, each person that swirls around the storm of The Fall delivers, from the beat cop to those high up in the police department who seem to continuously wonder whether a woman is up to the job, while innocent young women, all with similar looks and features, continue to fall victim to Paul’s evil obsession.

But for all of the light that Gillian Anderson brings to the role of Stella, The Fall is dark, seriously, it’s really dark and violent, but never gratuitous. If you are looking for a new binge series to catch and keep your attention, consider adding The Fall to your Netflix queue.
