Jane Sanders: Bernie Had No Secret Pact With Clinton, DNC Bias Must Be Exposed

Though recent WikiLeaks documents have been read as an indication that Bernie Sanders was forced or coerced into supporting Hillary Clinton after she won the Democratic nomination, his wife has now spoken up to say that is not the case. Responding to others on social media, Jane O’Meara Sanders spoke out on Sunday, denying that rumor, addressing the email behind it, and calling for a change in DNC rules. She says that the bias inside the party needs to be exposed further — after the election.

The words in question come from one of the Podesta emails, an apparent exchange between Robby Mook and Christina Reynolds. It should be established here that party officials have not confirmed that these emails are unedited, but also have made no claims of any falsification in them.

Mook is apparently responding to Reynolds’ previous email in which she says that Bernie Sanders has attacked Bill and Hillary Clinton on the subject of wealth, using the word “hustle.”

Mook responds:

This isn’t in keeping w the agreement. Since we clearly have some leverage, would be good to flag this for him.

Wikileaks shared a link to this email via Twitter, saying it demonstrates a “non-aggression pact” between Sanders and Clinton and questioning the “leverage” that might be used to enforce such an agreement. There has been speculation about whether this indicates Bernie entered into an agreement with Clinton before announcing his candidacy.

Jane Sanders addressed this, declaring that Mook must have meant Bernie’s declaration that he would keep a clean campaign, based on issues and not attacks. “There was no other agreement,” she affirms.

She also speaks out about a recent interview with Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. According to Politico, Wasserman-Schultz says that Bernie Sanders’ campaign has made her a scapegoat and that if she had wanted to rig the primary,

“…trust me, I could have, there are so many things that we, not I, could have done to enhance the campaign of one candidate over another.”

It was called to Jane Sanders’ attention on Twitter by Michael Graham, who referred to the statement as an attempt to marginalize Bernie and supporters and to rehabilitate Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in the public view.

Agreeing, Mrs. Sanders declared that after the election, it will be necessary to address problems with membership and rules in the DNC and to further expose the bias Bernie and his voters faced from the organization.

Note she said after the election. In the meantime, though, Bernie Sanders isn’t calling for a protest of democracy or the DNC. He’s asking supporters to place Hillary Clinton in the White House, despite his evident misgivings about DNC leadership.

Of course, he has been calling for a change to DNC leadership all along — including before Clinton was selected as the nominee, and before WikiLeaks released the emails that demonstrated that the DNC was not as unbiased as the public was led to believe.

Since Clinton was awarded the Democratic nomination, Sanders has campaigned beside her, asking that those who hoped to call him Mr. President to now focus on defeating Donald Trump, electing a Democrat who will promote many, if not all, of the ideals on which his campaign was centered, and on filling Congress with members who will work with that president.

Afterward — yes, after the election is over, Bernie says, in a piece for the Denver Post, he has a lot of big plans, including putting an end to,

“…a corrupt campaign finance system which, as a result of the disastrous Citizens United decision allows billionaires and corporate interests to buy elections.”

Until then, though, Bernie Sanders’ primary objective appears to be keeping Donald Trump from becoming President of the United States — and perhaps that’s all the “leverage” he needed to decide to throw his support behind Clinton.
