In South Korea, most K-dramas seem to be light-hearted, romantic comedies. The most popular are Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Jealousy Incarnate and Second To Last Love. Even now, the newer K-dramas, The Man Living In Our House and My Wife Is Having An Affair This Week, are adding to the light-hearted, romantic comedies pool.
However, probably the most popular K-drama from said paid is Shopping King Louis. Starring Seo In Guk, Nam Ji Hyun, Yoon Sang Hyun, and Im Se Mi, the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) K-drama is about Kang Ji Sung (In Guk), the sole heir to a wealthy Korean organization known as the Gold Group, who is also an expert when it comes to shopping, thus earning the nickname “Shopping King Louis.” Kang Ji Sung lost his memory and is taken in by Ko Bok Shil (Ji Hyun) and they work together to solve their biggest problems: finding Bok Shil’s brother and recovering Louis’ memories.
Shopping King Louis (also known as Shopaholic Louis) has come a long way since its initial release as there are only three episodes remaining before it concludes. Louis has recovered his memories and he is engaged to be married to Ko Bok Shil. Everything looks like it is wrapping up nicely, but there is one last unresolved issue and that is Louis’ treasure box. Seen in flashbacks in previous episodes, the treasure box seems to be far more important than meets the eye. With that in mind, will the contents of the treasure box get in the way of Louis and Ko Bok Shil’s happily ever after?
As mentioned earlier, the coveted treasure box was first seen in quick flashbacks of Louis’ childhood in earlier episodes. [WARNING: Spoilers Ahead!] In it, Louis is seen holding a couple of items in his hands which he places in the treasure box. He then places the treasure box into a secret floor compartment in a house he lived in when he was young, prior to moving to Europe. Though the items we see in Louis’ hands are probably only important to him, there must be something of high importance in the treasure box itself. Unfortunately, the viewers were not given a chance to see what it could be.
Apparently, both Chairwoman Choi and Butler Kim know about the contents of the treasure box, or know there is something of the highest importance in it. Louis reveals to Butler Kim where he hid the treasure box. However, when Butler Kim goes to retrieve it, it is missing. We eventually find out President Baek has it and it is also believed the treasure box is not open yet because he does not have the key for its lock.
The question is, what is the very important item in the treasure box that Chairwoman Choi and President Baek need? Given the fact that Chairwoman Choi’s son and Louis’ father was next in line to be the owner of Gold Group, it is possible he has a last will and testament in there. A will shall surely override any vote in the corporation, especially if it was made from the previous heir to Gold Group. Other than that, the only other important item that could possibly be in the treasure box could be something recording Gold Groups’ business transgressions like a ledger. However, it is very hard to see Chairwoman Choi doing anything villainous for her corporation.
The fight for Gold Group will most likely be the last conflict that needs to be resolved in Shopping King Louis. With only three episodes remaining, there is enough time to cover the story, though it will most likely be done in two episodes as the final episode will feature Louis and Ko Bok Shil’s marriage and family life in an in-the-finale epilogue. These two plot points will be enough to keep the viewership high until the K-drama concludes.
Speaking of viewership, as of the 13th episode, titled “This Is The Moment,” the viewership ratings provided by TNmS Media Korea are 11.4 percent for the nation and 12.8 percent for the Seoul National Capital Area. As for AGB Nielsen Korea, they are 10.0 percent for the nation and 10.6 percent for the Seoul National Capital Area.
Shopping King Louis airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10 p.m. KST on MBC. For those who do not have access to MBC, the series can be viewed exclusively for Viki Pass members on Viki.
