Carina Melchior awoke from a coma as doctors were preparing to start the process to harvest her organs for donation. The 19-year-old is rapidly becoming known as the girl who refused to die. The incredible story of resilience is being called a miracle by some. Less than 24 hours after staff at the Danish hospital turned off her breathing equipment and were ready to declare her brain dead, Carina opened her eyes and is now on the road to recovery.
The young woman slipped into a coma after a tragic car accident. Medical care workers advised the family to turn off Melchior’s life support equipment and began preparing for organ donation. When the teen suddenly began moving her legs and opened her eyes, the Aarhus Hospital was as shocked as the patient’s loved ones, according to the Daily Mail.
Carina is currently staying at a rehabilitation center and is once again learning how to talk, walk, and even how to ride on her horse, Mathilde. Melchior’s family is in the process of suing the hospital for damages, maintaining that the physicians had been desperate to harvest the their daughter’s usable organs.
Kim Melchior, the patient’s father, had this to say during an interview with Ekstra Bladet , a Danish newspaper:
“Those bandits in the white coats gave up too quickly because they wanted an organ donor.”
Family attorney, Nils Fjedberg, claims that Carina has asked repeatedly if the doctors were trying to kill her. He added that the events which unfolded at the hospital have been a traumatic experience for both the teenager and her parents. The young woman’s parents were allegedly convinced that there was no hope for recovery and the only thing left to be done was to donate her organs.
