‘The Vampire Diaries’ Love Triangle: Nina Dobrev Abandons Return As Ian Somerhalder Gushes Over Nikki Reed

As The Vampire Diaries heads into its final season, Ian Somerhalder is looking to a promising future in his personal life with wife Nikki Reed as well as in his future as an actor and director. While Somerhalder gushes about starting a family with Reed, his former co-star and ex-lover, Nina Dobrev, may have backed out of her agreement to return as Elena Gilbert in the final season of The Vampire Diaries. While it’s too soon to tell whether Dobrev’s hesitation to return to The Vampire Diaries has anything to do with Somerhalder’s promising future as a father, it seems like something more than a coincidence that the two events have come to the forefront at the same time.

US Weekly reveals that there was an undeniable attraction between The Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder and Twilight’s Nikki Reed long before they ever began dating. Ian suggests it was love at first sight, revealing that there was a chemistry between them from the beginning, though it wasn’t something they indulged while they were dating other people. Somerhalder also revealed that the joy of being married to Reed revolves around her ability to find happiness in the simplest moments. The Vampire Diaries star feels that this quality will make Nikki a beautiful mother one day.

“Oh, I will one day have amazing children with my beautiful wife. Absolutely, definitely,” says Somerhalder.

He says that, in addition to being able to deal with him on a daily basis, Nikki Reed has also earned his respect and love because she’s shown herself to be a compassionate, caring person. Also, much like The Vampire Diaries star himself, Reed is also an animal lover.

Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed work together in contributing to a variety of charity and causes, mostly through the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.

“My goal and Nikki’s goal in life is literally — my goal in particular — is to build for-profit entities that will literally feed our necessary non-profit initiatives till the end of time,” said Somerhalder. “We definitely share that passion together in a very huge way.”

While Ian Somerhalder and Nikki Reed are thriving in their wedded bliss, fans of The Vampire Diaries are eager to see Somerhalder’s TVD character reunited with Nina Dobrev’s Elena Gilbert. As Mobile & Apps reveals, however, that may not be in the cards. Sources close to Dobrev reported that Nina is concerned about what her return to the series would have on Ian and Nikki, just as gossip surrounding their love triangle has finally died down. For that reason, Dobrev is reluctant to return to play Somerhalder’s love interest.

Even so, there may be hope for Dobrev’s reprisal of Elena Gilbert. Sources indicate that Nina may be open to a return to The Vampire Diaries if her role were to be rewritten as a love interest for Paul Wesley’s Stefan Salvatore.

It seems the future of Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries isn’t as certain as showrunner Julie Plec has indicated to fans, leaving many to wonder how the series would end should Dobrev refuse to return.

“I know that [Nina] 100 percent wants to be there and I, of course, 100 percent want [Nina] to be there,” says Plec of Dobrev coming back for the final season.

While Plec seems outwardly to have pinned her hopes on the being able to bring Nina Dobrev back for the last episodes of The Vampire Diaries, it has been revealed that there is already a contingency in place should Plec and Dobrev fail to reach an agreement.

“We collectively came to the same place,” said CW president, Mark Pedowitz about the end of The Vampire Diaries. “We backed Julie[Plec] in her decision…there are discussions going on with Nina, we’d love to have her back…These are discussions that go on, hopefully she’ll be back, but should it not work out, Julie has planned out a great series finale for fans.”

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays on the CW network.
