‘American Horror Story’ Season 6: Who Is Lying? Creator Ryan Murphy Tells All
Things keep getting stranger and stranger on American Horror Story: Roanoke.
Episode 6 revealed a major twist about what is really going on between Matt, Shelby, and Lee. Although fans learned a lot in the latest installment, creator Ryan Murphy teased that not everything is what it seems.
Are some of the characters lying about their experiences at the haunted house?
According to Refinery, the last episode united the re-enactors with Shelby, Matt, and Lee and took fans back to the haunted house.
The production team followed the six characters to document the ghostly encounters and find out what really happened.
Unfortunately, the night ended with one of the nurses murdering Rory, leaving fans wondering if the nightmare is starting all over again.
That being said, Murphy cautioned fans not to read too much into what Shelby, Matt, and Lee recall.
“You cannot trust them,” Murphy stated. “I think all three of them are… what they said and what they explained in their version of events is not actually the truth.
Of course, many fans suspected that the three – played by Lily Rabe, Adina Porter, and Andre Holland – were not telling the whole truth during the documentary.
Now, it sounds like elements of their story are not true, especially how they escaped the Butcher at the end of episode 5.
As fans will recall, the Polks told the trio that they survived the Butcher by sacrificing people at the Blood Moon every year.
Is it possible that Shelby and Matt are following suit and promised to sacrifice others to save themselves?
This is certainly a dark move by Shelby, Matt, and Lee, but it also explains why they were willing to return to the house with the other actors.
Whatever happens in the coming episodes, TV Guide reports that new actors will portray the ghosts in the second half of the season.
Kathy Bates gave an incredible performance as the Butcher in the first half of the season.
Thankfully, American Horror Story has plenty of actresses at their disposal to fill Bates’ shoes, including Mare Winningham and Patti LuPone.
At the same time, there is a possibility that Taissa Farmiga could return to play an older Priscilla. Farmiga hasn’t been seen since Coven, so this would be the perfect chance to bring her back.
Evan Peters finally appeared this season as Edward Mott and Finn Wittrock would be his obvious replacement. However, Murphy said that Wittrock’s character is “his most f-ed character of all time,” and Edward doesn’t fit that bill.
If Wittrock doesn’t play Edward, then Matt Bomer could certainly fill those shoes. After all, Bomer and Wittrock look alike and have played similar roles in the past.
Luckily, there are other crazy roles Wittrock could play this season.
This includes Piggy Man, whose true identity hasn’t been revealed.
Meanwhile, Bustle is reporting that only one character will make it out alive at the end of the season.
Who will survive the haunted house?
Out of all the characters we’ve seen this season, Shelby probably has the best chance of surviving another stay on the island.
Not only does she have experience with the ghosts at Roanoke, but Murphy is planning on connecting this season to Coven.
We’ve already seen this link with Lady Gaga’s Scathach, who was actually the first Supreme.
“I knew that this character was important to the mythology of the show, and I really wanted her to play that character,” Murphy explained. “There is something fascinating about the show’s mythology that we’re tapping into here, and we have more little things that.”
Shelby also has an interest in the occult and might be another connection to Coven.
Speaking of previous seasons, Movie News Guide revealed that Murphy would bring some Freak Show characters back into the fold next season.
“We’re going to announce [the premise] in the spring,” Murphy shared. “We’re not doing a secrecy thing, but [next season] does have a big hook behind it.”
Until then, fans have plenty of twists and turns to look forward as the second half of Roanoke unfolds.
According to Carter Matt, there are two theories that might explain what will happen from here on out.
For starters, there is a possibility that producers are lying about how many people survive the documentary. Just because it says that only person makes it out doesn’t mean that it’s true.
Secondly, we might be watching yet another show within a show. If that is the case, then we might be watching a bunch of people making a fake reality show that is completely fictional.
That being said, all of the characters have an uphill battle ahead, especially if they want to make it out alive.
