Donald Glover To Be Cast As Lando Calrissian In New ‘Star Wars’ Film

Donald Glover is taking on yet another project, and he’s feeling the Force with his latest role.

If you’re familiar with Childish Gambino, then you know that Donald Glover is a cut above the rest. The actor has been in many roles in series such as Atlanta, 30 Rock, and Community. While we’ve seen him in both comedic and serious roles, nothing compares to what Donald has in store for fans.

Donald Glover is being cast as Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo movie. We’ve known that the film was in the works behind the scenes, but there were no true reveals as to who would be cast. But if it’s a movie about Han Solo, there’s an almost unspoken need for the best in comedy and entertainment to be included.

According to Ubergizmo, it’s reported that Lucasfilm stated that Glover would play Lando in his “formative years.” It’s only logical that we take this to mean that Glover will play the young Lando in the Star Wars galaxy, Han Solo’s trusted buddy.

Han Solo, the scoundrel and hero in Star Wars played by Harrison Ford, is an iconic character that many can recognize almost immediately. That makes it pretty big for Donald Glover to receive a role in such a highly-anticipated movie. Rumors have circulated for months that he would be picked. But on the other hand, it’s still common for people to not know who Donald Glover is.

Donald, known to fans of his music as “Childish Gambino,” has dabbled in multiple projects. This could be the one that requires the most out of him, and directors are already making comments about his role in the Han Solo movie. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller had this to say about Glover when discussing his role as Lando Calrissian.

“These are big shoes to fill, and an even bigger cape, and this one fits him perfectly, which will save us money on alterations,” they began. “Also, we’d like to publicly apologize to Donald for ruining Comic-Con for him forever.”

If this is any indication of how unknown Donald Glover is, it’s not hard to imagine that some will probably scratch their heads if they haven’t done their homework on him. It’s somewhat understandable, given the fact that the young actor started out on YouTube.

Donald Glover is about as close as a person could get to being the spitting image of Lando Calrissian, it seems. Alongside Han Solo, Lando was once a smooth-talking smuggler in the Star Wars universe. We see him attempt to get rich by whatever means possible, though time changes him. Leaving the fact that Donald’s appearance is arguably rather similar to what Lando would look like at a young age aside, Calrissian eventually turns to leadership. He’s witty and daring, making it easy for Glover to relate.

It’s good to see Donald Glover in such a big role, especially after he’s gone after others. Us Weekly Magazine reports that supporters and fans of the actor and rapper wanted him to play Spider-Man. Obviously, directors felt that Andrew Garfield would be the better choice. Still, Glover’s voice was cast for Miles Morales, the web-slinging Spidey in Ultimate Spider-Man.

Will Donald Glover pull off the character of Lando Calrissian in the new Han Solo movie? Time will tell. The movie is set to be released in 2018, so Glover has plenty of time to work on getting into the role. If newcomers to the actor want to see his work, episodes of Atlanta are recent and present just a taste of what the young performer can do.
