Ian Somerhalder Is Bringing A ‘S**t Ton Of Mayhem’ To Season 8 Of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ [Sneak Peek]
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) has always had a knack for stirring up trouble, but after getting possessed at the end of Season 7, things are only going to worse for the folks in Mystic Falls. Is there hope for Damon as The Vampire Diaries heads into Season 8?
“He’s super possessed by an enemy that we essentially don’t know what it is,” Somerhalder told E! News. “Damon’s a bit of a loose cannon. His girl is in a box, he’s been through hell and high water, and so him being susceptible to this sort of new energy just sort of feeds into the times.”
Sound familiar?
“He does a lot of stuff that is very much in the vein of the old Damon, but instead of being based in what was love now it’s just this sort of weird obsession that he is doing a lot of evil stuff and he’s conflicted,” Somerhalder explained.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like Damon is going to shake himself from the possession anytime soon.
Season 8 will pick up with Damon and Enzo (Michael Malarkey) fighting the possession and piling up the bodies. It won’t take long before Stefan (Paul Wesley) gets involved and tries to save his brother.
“As we get deeper and deeper and deeper into the seasons Stefan comes into the fold in a big way, and you just have a s **t ton of mayhem,” Somerhalder added.
Thankfully, Stefan will have a little bit of help to bring Damon back from the dark side. Both Caroline (Candice King) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) agree to help Stefan in his quest to save Damon.
“Caroline, Stefan, and Bonnie are trying to find Damon and Enzo,” King explained. “They know that [the boys are] causing mayhem wherever they go and they’re trying to get to the bottom of why they’ve fallen into such a deep, dark, thoughtless spell.”
We still don’t know a whole lot about the evil entity that is possessing Damon and Enzo, and it sounds like fans will have to wait until the Season 8 premiere to find out exactly what it is.
Matt Davis (Alaric) did, however, offer a few clues at what it might be, saying that the evil is “a pretty epic twist and take on an old mythology.” Of course, that could mean just about anything. Until the premiere, there’s no telling what the spirit is or what it wants with the vampires.
“We’re updating that, and Alaric, being the head of the armory now, is employing his knowledge and his wisdom and the resources of the armory to help try to track down who the big bad guy is and how it specifically relates to him and his kids,” Davis added.
Meanwhile, Damon’s possession isn’t the only thing on his mind this season.
According to the Stir, the promo trailer for Season 8 shows Damon reading a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey. The irony may be lost on some fans, but it was widely reported that Ian Somerhalder campaigned for the role of Christian Grey.
Now, fans are already theorizing what this might mean and how the erotic series ties into the Vampire Diaries final season. But for Damon, he claims that he is just accepting a “new appreciation for chick lit.” At the same time, iTech Post reports that Damon reading the book is yet another sign of him flipping the switch on his humanity.
In the trailer, Damon is shown reading the BDSM novel while sitting next to a pool of blood. Enzo struggles to deal with Damon’s new dark side while Damon admits that his is on “full cruise control.”

According to ET Online, Enzo goes on to question whether or not Damon has any sense of humanity left.
“You really have nothing left inside?” he asks Damon.
“Just my winning sense of humor and my new appreciation for chick lit,” Damon retorts.
Possession aside, part of why Damon has run off the deep end is because of the love of his life, Elena (Nina Dobrev), is in a box. Speaking of Elena, iTech Post reports that fans still don’t know for sure whether or not Dobrev will reprise her role in the show’s final season. Executive producer Julie Plec started the rumors of Dobrev’s return when she revealed that the actress was in talks for making one final cameo.
Dobrev’s return, however, isn’t without a good deal of controversy. Somerhalder and Dobrev were romantically involved during their time on the show. The actress left the series shortly after things went south and Somerhalder moved on to marry Nikki Reed.
Rumors hint that Reed isn’t happy with the idea of Somerhalder working with his ex-girlfriend on the show, especially if it means the two reigniting their on-screen romance. Sadly, it sounds like fans will have to wait a bit longer to learn if Dobrev will make one last appearance.
Fans can watch Ian Somerhalder’s Damon Salvatore fall further into darkness when Season 8 of The Vampire Diaries premieres on October 21 on The CW.
