Matthew Gray Gubler of Criminal Minds grew up in Las Vegas, but unlike most people who currently live in Vegas because it is a huge city, Matthew’s family has a long history there, spanning back many generations to a time when it was a small town of only 10,000 residents, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Matthew Gray Gubler’s grandfather was an attorney in Las Vegas long before it became a center for casinos, quick weddings, and live entertainment. In fact, that center was far from the world Matthew grew up in as well. Like his grandfather, Matthew’s dad, John Gubler was an attorney, practicing in Las Vegas for 45 years.
The Criminal Minds star and voice for Simon of Alvin and the Chipmunks grew up in a neighborhood far from the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip. John Gubler built a lovely home of just over 3,000 square feet in 1979, the year before Matthew was born in March of 1980.
Matthew Gray Gubler of Criminal Minds grew up in that home with his father, John Gubler, mom Mollie, sister Laura and his brother Gray. The family is quite affluent, very stable and the parents provided a wonderful home for Matthew, Gray and Laura Gubler.
Matthew Gray Gubler’s childhood home is in a tranquil setting that adjoins The Springs Preserve, a lovely nature and wildlife preserve. The home was designed by the gifted architect Edward DeLorenzo who told the Review-Journal he had built two homes for John Gubler and family.
“I didn’t do a lot of residential work, but I designed John’s first home, and it was a ‘country’ flavor but it wasn’t quite as focused on the Frank Lloyd Wright style as his house in The Ridges.”
Coincidentally, Dr. Spencer Reid on Criminal Minds also hails from Las Vegas, but Spencer’s childhood was far different Matthew’s. While Dr. Reid was an academic prodigy, Gubler was a prodigy of the arts, gaining the right to attend a magnet high school for the arts called Las Vegas Academy through an audition process. The school offers “majors” in performing arts, visual arts or liberal arts.
Matthew Gray Gubler’s education has been highly focused on the arts. He attended New York University, the University of California at Santa Cruz and Tisch School of the Arts.
Matthew Gray Gubler’s parents began building a second Las Vegas home with architect Edward Lorenzo in 2001. That would have been while Matthew was in college. The new house is three times the size of their first house and quite impressive. It is prairie style and yet its design is inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. It features a massive redwood stairway and a fireplace wall that extends two stories. The house is a one of a kind, and overall quite a work of art.
John Gubler lightheartedly joked that his son Matthew had a few really unique ideas for the family mansion in the desert.
“My son Matthew joked about having a fireman’s pole from the top floor to the bottom, but we didn’t do that.”
Isn’t that such a Matthew Gray Gubler thing to want? Of course, his parents opted for the elegant stairway instead.
Sadly, the Criminal Minds star’s parents will be selling the bigger home soon and returning to the home Matthew grew up in. John Gubler told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that with the kids grown, they really no longer need the 9,411-square-foot home. The empty nest couple is returning to the home they raised their three children in. They must have so many happy memories in that house anyway.
“Our children are all grown, and the house seems to be big for just the two of us.”
Matthew Gray Gubler’s parents are selling their dream home. The house is listed for $4,950,000 and will make a fine home for some lucky family. The backyard faces a golf course in a very nice community. Like the Gubler’s first home, the location is peaceful and serene.
Criminal Minds is now in Season 12 and Matthew Gray Gubler directed Episode 6, which was written by Erica Messer. Episode 6, titled “Elliot’s Pond,” is sure to be a treat, with Gubler again in the director’s chair. “Elliot’s Pond” will air on November 9.

Matthew Gray Gubler has been part of the Criminal Minds cast since the show began in 2005. Since then, there have been many casting changes and few of the original or long-time cast members remain. Dr. Spencer Reid and Penelope Garcia are the only original characters still with the BAU.
Criminal Minds seems to suit Matthew Gray Gubler, who isn’t about to leave the popular series. He seems content in the role and still manages to make his share of artistic films in his spare time. The entire Gubler family is proud of Matthew’s promising career.
