‘The Walking Dead’ Season 7 Theory: Could Each Episode Link Back To Previous Seasons?

Could every episode of Season 7 of AMC’s The Walking Dead link back to previous seasons? A recent theory suggests this could be so.

Spoiler alert: This article discusses the Season 6 finale of AMC’s The Walking Dead as well as speculates about Season 7. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

Ever since Ryan Murphy announced every season of American Horror Story would be connected, fans got excited to find all the connections. One theory suggested that each episode of the current season of American Horror Story: Roanoke would link back to its corresponding season. So, for example, Episode 1 of AHS Roanoke seemed to link back to Murder House (Season 1) via the fact the episode was about the purchase of a haunted house. Each week fans eagerly try to find the connection between each episode and its correlating season. But, has another network sneakily jumped on the bandwagon?

Season 6 of AMC’s The Walking Dead ended on a massive cliffhanger. Until Season 7 airs, fans will not know who newcomer, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), has bludgeoned to death with his bat. Since then, fans have been eager to try and work out who died, using every scrap of information on the internet to develop their theories. However, has AMC slipped in some clues with the release of the first three episode titles?

The official synopsis for Episode 1 (entitled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”) of Season 7 of The Walking Dead is below.

“Last season ended with Rick and our group kneeling helplessly before Negan and his group. What Negan does will haunt those who survive forever.”

With the announcement of the titles of the first three episodes of Season 7 of The Walking Dead, it seems AMC might be trying out the same thing. As Comic Book pointed out, the Episode 1 title, “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be,” is also a phrase Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich) uttered to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) back in Season 1 of The Walking Dead. While the title can be read two different ways, firstly by implying that “one day you will be dead,” it is the second meaning that relates back to Dr. Jenner. In Season 1 of The Walking Dead, Rick had thanked Dr. Jenner for allowing him to live. Dr. Jenner had replied with the Season 7, Episode 1 title phrase, implying that one day Rick would regret the day Dr. Jenner allowed him to live. And, if the Season 6 finale taught fans anything, it is that Rick has certainly come to fully appreciate what Dr. Jenner said to him.

However, as Digital Spy points out, it seems the newly released titles for Episodes 2 and 3 of Season 7 could also link back to Season 2 and 3 of The Walking Dead.

The title for Episode 2 of Season 7 of The Walking Dead is “The Well.” The synopsis is below.

“For a number of familiar faces, a new, well-established community seems too good to be true.”

While the synopsis is vague, it is the title that is reminiscent of a very memorable moment in Season 2 of The Walking Dead: when Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun) went down the well in an effort to retrieve a walker that was polluting the water supply. So, could AMC be referencing Glenn in this episode? And, if so, could it imply Glenn was the one murdered by Negan in the Season 7 premiere? After all, it is likely the episode after the one in which it is revealed who Negan kills would deal with how everyone else deals with the loss of this character.

The title for Episode 3 of Season 7 of The Walking Dead is, “The Cell.” The synopsis is below.

“A new group of survivors seem to have it all in their impressive community; however, there is a price.”

Once again, the title is vague. However, Season 3 of The Walking Dead spent a large amount of time inside the walls of a prison, so could AMC be referencing that in their title? Considering, Season 3 also saw the introduction of the Governor (David Morrissey), could this episode perhaps deal with how Rick’s group comes to terms with the new villain in the show?

And, if American Horror Story is anything this go by in regard to episodes linking back to previous seasons, does that also mean Episode 7 of The Walking Dead will reveal a huge twist? Only by tuning into Season 7 of The Walking Dead will the answers be revealed.
