It looks like the Total Variety Network (tvN) has another popular K-drama in the making with The K2. The series will most-likely finish a successful year for the Korean television company following after other popular K-dramas like Cheese in the Trap, Let’s Fight Ghost, Reply 1988, Signal, Memory, Cinderella and Four Knights, and the most-popular series not only for the year but out of all Korean pay cable dramas of all time, Another Oh Hae Young. Pertaining to the last K-drama on that list, the successful debut The K2 had might be a sign that it will surpass it.
Four episodes of The K2 have already aired, and K-drama fans cannot get enough of it. While waiting for the next episode to air, many are pondering on what they have learned so far, spotting foreshadows and figuring out clues that will give them a step up on what will happen. One bit of foreshadowing may have already been shown in the third episode, and it may also pertain to all the promotions prior to its debut. Were all the promotions pairing the characters Kim Je Ha, better known by his code name “K2,” and Go Anna a decoy to distract fans for an upcoming love triangle angle?
Before analyzing the foreshadowing that points to the possibility of a probably love triangle, it is best to detail that in the synopsis of The K2, Kim Je Ha (Ji Chang Wook) is tasked with protecting Go Anna (Yoona), the illegitimate daughter of Jang Se Joon (Jo Sung Ha), a politician favored among South Koreans to become the country’s next president. It also claims in the synopsis that Je Ha and Anna begin to fall in love as they get to know each other. On top of that, there are numerous promotions, especially a promotional poster, pairing Kim Je Ha with Go Anna.
Despite the promotions, it is possible they were a distraction or a decoy to conceal an upcoming love triangle between Kim Je Ha, Go Anna, and Choi Yoo Jin.
Warning: There are spoilers ahead!
The clues foreshadowing the upcoming love triangle starts in Episode 3. After the epic car chase scene in which Je Ha and Yoo Jin end up crashing, there is a moment when Je Ha could leave Yoo Jin behind to die in the burning car. Given the events that took place in the second episode, Je Ha would be free from Yoo Jin’s constant search for him if he let her die. Instead, Je Ha actually saves Yoo Jin. Summarized, the man being hunted just saved the one initiating the hunt. Not only that, Kim Je Ha actually protects Choi Yoo Jin from a piece of debris after the car they escape from explodes.
When Choi Yoo Jin realizes that Kim Je Ha saved her from the burning car, she has mixed emotions. Just moments ago, Je Ha held her hostage, threatening her life. Then, all of a sudden, he saves her.
It is possible at that moment, Choi Yoo Jin experienced a form of Stockholm Syndrome in which she now has feelings of affection for Kim Je Ha simply because he showed some sort of caring towards her. That is something Yoo Jin does not receive from her husband, Jang Se Joon, because their marriage is one of political gain and benefit. We learn more of this in the third episode when both Yoo Jin and Se Joon are in the same hospital room after Se Joon makes an off-color remark about how he has to pretend to care for Yoo Jin. Even in the fourth episode, during a formal party, Yoo Jin is watching Se Joon schmoozing with three gorgeous ladies, yet she does not seem to care.
There is also the possibility that Choi Yoo Jin cannot have such emotions for Kim Je Ha because she is cold and calculating. Yet, such emotions could have resurfaced given the fact Choi Yoo Jin did face her own mortality.
Ultimately, all of this is just speculation. It may or may not lead to anything, but the signs point to probably scenarios. Also, pairing Kim Je Ha with Choi Yoo Jin would make a “noona” relationship. For the past three years, that kind of relationship has been very popular among Koreans. Kim Soo Hyun and Gong Hyo Jin in Producer, Kim Soo Hyun and Jeon Ji Hyun in My Love From Another Star, Taecyeon and Kim So Hyun in Let’s Fight Ghost, Ha Ji Won and L in The Time We Were Not in Love, and Lee Jong Suk and Lee Bo Young in I Hear Your Voice are just some examples.
The K2 airs on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. KST on tvN. For those who do not have access to Korean pay channels such at tvN, it can be viewed for free, with ads, exclusively on DramaFever pending region. Take note, starting with Episode 3, new episodes are given one week of exclusive viewership only to premium members.
