WWE News: Paul Heyman Talks Possibility Of The Rock Vs. Brock Lesnar, Would It Work?
Not many WWE superstars, past or present, could say they’ve done as much as the Rock or Brock Lesnar. Dwayne Johnson is a global icon, who gave up professional wrestling to pursue a Hollywood career. It was a critical decision in his career, but it ended up working out for him. He’s very well-known in the acting scene and occasionally going back to the WWE is extremely helpful to maintain his worldwide appeal. He is the Rock after all.
As for Brock Lesnar, he’s the Beast Incarnate and the man who ended the Undertaker’s undefeated streak at WrestleMania. Paul Heyman, Lesnar’s advocate, reminded the WWE Universe of that numerous times, and it worked for Lesnar’s character. At one point, he was the most over wrestler on the roster. Every time Lesnar was announced, he could sell tickets. Lesnar could sell t-shirts and thanks to a WWE Raw crowd after WrestleMania, Suplex City was born.
The two legends of the sport faced off once before. It was actually the Rock’s last match before his first departure from WWE in the early-2000s. Lesnar defeated the Rock, which set up Lesnar for stardom. He was already on his way, but with the Rock putting over the Beast Incarnate that way, it certainly helped Brock’s rise to the top of the WWE mountain. The Rock will always be a legendary figure in professional wrestling. Lesnar is already there as well.
However, it’s not 2002 anymore. It’s 2016, and things have turned around 180-degrees. That doesn’t mean the match won’t happen again. Rock will return one day soon, and Lesnar is already booked for WrestleMania. Could the Great One match up against the Beast? According to a report by SEScoops.com, Paul Heyman teased a match between the Rock and Brock Lesnar at a future date.
“I think Brock Lesnar against anyone is an automatic sell-out,” he said of Lesnar’s drawing power. “Brock does not wrestle 52 Monday’s a year on Monday Night Raw, he does not come to your home town every week, his appearances are rare. They are unique and extraordinary. Which is why, whenever Brock Lesnar appears it is a rare and unique opportunity for the paying customer to see the greatest living athlete in the history of WWE appear live in an extraordinary event that only Brock Lesnar can deliver on. This is why he is the greatest box office attraction.”
Is Heyman right? Is Lesnar the greatest box office attraction? Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that is the case anymore. While the Rock is the highest grossing movie star in Hollywood, he could sell out a show a faster than Lesnar and Heyman could. Could this match even work? Does it actually make sense to have another match between the two men? The Rock is busy preparing for his new movie, Moana. So, if a match were to happen, the build couldn’t start until at least the new year.
Lesnar hasn’t been back in months and isn’t promoting a new fight. He just fought Randy Orton at SummerSlam, concussed him and left. In many WWE fans’ opinion, it was completely irresponsible of the former-WWE champion to do that and take no responsibility. As mentioned in a recent article by the Inquisitr, it appears that Lesnar isn’t done with MMA.
He defeated Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in a good fight, but Lesnar got in trouble with the USADA after a drug violation was uncovered. So, logically speaking, will a match between Rock and Lesnar put WWE fans into the seats? It’d have to happen at WrestleMania 33, but there’s always the potential of Goldberg returning. WWE fans might have to wait and see for the Rock and Lesnar, which might be a good thing.
