WWE Clash of Champions Results: Kevin Owens Retains Championship
Despite five championships being on the line at Clash of Champions, the WWE Heavyweight Championship is going to remain with the man that walked into the Bankers Life Fieldhouse with the belt in the first place. Kevin Owens managed to beat Seth Rollins to remain the top champion on the Raw brand, as reported by Wrestling Inc.
Kevin Owens was given the opportunity of a lifetime when Triple H and the front office decided to put the top belt in WWE on him. Usually, that position is reserved for guys that are candidates to be on the front cover of Muscle and Fitness magazine.
For Kevin Owens to be successful as the WWE Heavyweight Champion, management knew that they would need a variety of opponents for him to work against. A champion that works against the same opponents over and over again grows stale rather quickly, especially in the modern landscape where fans expect new things all the time.

To ensure that Kevin Owens has a quality opponent to work with in the main event of Clash of the Champions, WWE decided to turn Seth Rollins, once the top heel in the company, into a baby face by having Triple H turning on him.
To the surprise of very few that keep up closely with WWE, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens both came through and produced a quality main event at Clash of the Champions. Both are tremendous in ring workers, and they managed to entertain the audience at the pay per view.
For the past several weeks, WWE has been trying to sell to the audience that Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens were best of friends. Both of them are associated with Canada and are considered huge fans of the professional wrestling industry. Jericho and Owens have been working together quite frequently.
Chris Jericho was booked by WWE to get involved in the match. The goal for his character was to help Kevin Owens do what he can to keep the world heavyweight championship from being taken by Seth Rollins. Jericho got physically involved as expected.
As typical of matches where the heel champion is supposed to keep his belt due to outside interference, Chris Jericho was heavily involved in the referee being predictably unable to focus completely on Kevin Owens fending off Seth Rollins in the main event of Clash of the Champions.
When a second referee was needed, Stephanie McMahon, who plays a phenomenal heel authority figure on Monday Night Raw each week, made his appearance at Clash of the Champions. Interestingly enough, the second referee takes some time to check on the first referee, which makes it appear that was instructed by McMahon to do that.
Once the action returned to the ring, Seth Rollins managed to get the second referee back on track. Unfortunately for Rollins, though, he walked right into a pop-up power bomb from Kevin Owens. That was enough for Owens to pick up the victory and retain the WWE Heavyweight Championship.
With the way that the main event of Clash of Champions was booked, it appears that a feud between Chris Jericho and Seth Rollins might have been set up. There is a good chance that the two of them will build towards their feud on Monday Night Raw this week.
WWE knew that they did not have to put on the show of the year with Clash of Champions. Things have changed with the WWE Network and the brand split. However, management successfully put on a fairly entertaining show on Sunday night.
