Twenty One Pilots On New Album: ‘The Question Is Where Do We Want To Take Our Fans Next?’

Twenty One Pilots took a moment out of performing live to discuss the possibility of a new album. Blurryface, the album released by Twenty One Pilots in 2015, has been experiencing tremendous success and Pilots’ fans are undoubtedly itching to get a hold of some new tunes from Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Unfortunately though, it looks like a new album isn’t anywhere in the near future for TOP fans.

According to an interview with Billboard, Twenty One Pilots frontman Tyler Joseph said that the followup album to Blurryface is currently just a bunch of “ideas” at the moment, suggesting that the duo probably hasn’t concretely put together any songs. Joseph, the primary songwriter for Twenty One Pilots, is well known for pursuing artistic integrity in his music and doesn’t want to be rushed into anything simply because Blurryface has been an overwhelming success. In other words, Joseph doesn’t want the next Pilots’ album to be a bunch of songs that are thrown together so much as a “story.” And even more importantly, he wants Twenty One Pilots to plan the future stage show in conjunction with any new music.

“So the question is where do we want to take our fans next, not just with the music, but also the show. We take a lot of pride in our live show,” Tyler Joseph told Billboard in an interview at the iHeartRadio Music Festival where Twenty One Pilots was performing.

And the Twenty One Pilots live show seems to be part of the band’s draw. Joseph and Dun have been selling out arenas worldwide while on their “Emotional Roadshow World Tour.” The duo is said to break out everything from body paints to costumes to a human-sized hamster ball that Joseph uses to roll over the crowd. While their fans got a little bit rambunctious at the Reading Festival, tearing Joseph’s shirt and stealing a shoe as he crowd surfed, Twenty One Pilots continues to press on with their high energy stage show.

In a backstage interview with iHeartRadio Music Festival host Woody, Joseph and Dun discussed the importance of creating unique and interactive experiences for their fans with their live concerts. Tyler jokingly mentioned that it was Josh’s shirtlessness at some point throughout each performance that really motivated the Twenty One Pilots’ fans. Dun once again stated that each performance leads to new ideas that he and Joseph would discuss with their road crew to try to determine the logistics of. The collaborative process of the Twenty One Pilots duo undoubtedly is what keeps the duo fresh, meaning future music should be equally as satisfying to their legions of fans.

Though they had a brief stop in the U.S. for the iHeartRadio Music Festival, Twenty One Pilots will be playing in other parts of the world for the rest of 2016, including Mexico and Russia before returning to the U.S. in January with Jon Bellion through March. The busyness of their current tour could mean that any new music will stay in the idea stage for another six months.

While Twenty One Pilots’ fans may be distraught that no new music is on the way, the duo did give music listeners a treat last week when they released their cover of My Chemical Romance’s “Cancer.” Fans fell immediately in love with the song, helping the Twenty One Pilots’ cover to debut at No. 5 on the Billboard charts.

As previously reported by Inquisitr just three weeks ago, Twenty One Pilots accomplished a feat only previously accomplished by Elvis and the Beatles when they had two songs simultaneously in the Top 5 for the Billboard charts. With a third song hitting the Top 5, perhaps a success driven Tyler Joseph will further surprise fans by debuting new music while on the road. In fact, if there is anything that Twenty One Pilots fans’ have come to expect from them, it is the unexpected.
