WWE News: WWE Planning For Brock Lesnar to Face The Rock at Wrestlemania 33
WWE officials have been trying to book a match between Brock Lesnar and The Rock ever since 2014. After Wrestlemania 29, Lesnar had been defeated by Triple H and Rock had lost the WWE Championship to John Cena in their epic rematch of the year before. The plan was for Brock to attack The People’s Champion and set up a year long feud that would culminate in Brock vs. Rock for Wrestlemania 30.
Obviously, history wasn’t written that way. Since Wrestlemania 29, The Rock hasn’t wrestled another match and Brock Lesnar hasn’t lost another match clean. Rock has returned for a few fun promos over the last two-plus years while Brock broke Undertaker’s Wrestlemania Undefeated Streak, became WWE Champion, main evented Wrestlemania, and much more. The point is that a lot has changed in WWE in just two years.
Despite all that has happened in two years of WWE programming, Brock vs. Rock continues to be at the top of the wishlist for WWE officials going into Wrestlemania every year. Every year, complications arise and force WWE to delay the match for another year. Apparently, this year will be no different than the last few.
Recently, WWE revealed that The Rock’s wrestling career is not entirely dead. No one has announced that his last match against Cena at Wrestlemania 29 would be the final of his career. After all, The Rock just had a “match” against Erick Rowan, but the majority of people won’t count that as a real match. The point is that the possibility of The Rock having another match in WWE is alive and well.
The Rock’s schedule in Hollywood prevents him from being involved with WWE on a regular basis. That makes it difficult to do much more than a promo because it takes TV time to promote a match. Not only that but the risk and physical toll of another match would be unnecessary for him. So, there are a lot of factors standing in the way for WWE to make Brock vs. Rock a reality, but that won’t stopping them from trying.
However, a new report is claiming that WWE officials are still trying to plan Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock for Wrestlemania 33 in Orlando. Even if WWE could balance Rock’s schedule and Brock’s enough to push their feud on WWE television, there are too many questions about the impact their match would have on WWE.
Simply put, Lesnar vs. Rock doesn’t do anything for the long-term future of WWE aside from providing a huge payday for the company. It’s understandable that is the goal of the match, but their match would be a booking nightmare for WWE officials. Brock Lesnar doesn’t get a huge boost of momentum for beating The Rock, and the latter being the one to defeat Lesnar clean doesn’t do anything for the WWE product.
Many WWE fans would argue that if Brock Lesnar is going to lose clean, it should be to an active wrestler who will be able to carry the momentum and career boost of the win. The Rock wouldn’t be able to capitalize on the victory because he’d be back in Hollywood. That booking would only hurt Lesnar and take the chance away from another WWE Superstar. Eventually, another WWE Superstar would have to defeat Rock, which would lead to another match. Based on the recent history, no one knows when that could actually happen.
Brock vs. Rock looks incredible on paper and would make an insane amount of money for WWE. However, the logistics of the actual match, the booking decisions that must be made, and even the scheduling are too complex for their match to be anything less than disappointment despite the financial success it would have for WWE. The powers that be can keep trying, but Brock vs. Rock may be better off left to the imagination.
