WWE News: Roman Reigns Expected To Win United States Championship At ‘WWE Clash of Champions’
Roman Reigns has had an intense year on WWE programming and behind the scenes. When 2016 began, he was the WWE Champion until Triple H returned to take the title from him at WWE Royal Rumble. That led us to Wrestlemania 32 and Reigns regained the WWE title, until losing it a WWE Money in the Bank due to a violation of WWE’s Wellness Policy that forced him to miss the WWE Draft and brand extension in July.
Since returning from his 30-day suspension, Reigns has been bouncing back and forth over the thin line between Raw’s main event and upper mid-card. More specifically, he’s been challenging for the U.S. title and the WWE Universal Championship essentially at the same time. It’s almost like WWE officials aren’t sure what the right role is for Roman Reigns right now, and they continue to try both things until one sticks.
They must have made their decision because Roman Reigns was vying for a spot in the WWE Universal Championship match for WWE Clash of Champions, but Rusev cost him that chance on Raw a few weeks ago. Now, Reigns has another chance against Rusev to become the United States Champion, but has WWE finally made the decision that is the place they want Reigns to be in on Raw for the next several months?
The feud between Reigns and Rusev never concluded, so it makes sense that their rivalry should end before either man moves onto the next chapter of their careers. Regardless of the outcome, Reigns vs. Rusev is a huge boost for the prestige of the United States Championship. On paper, it legitimizes The Bulgarian Brute as a future main event player on Raw and looks to rebuild Roman Reigns as a strong face in Raw’s midcard.
From an optimistic perspective, the rivalry has been very good for both men. The fact is both men are going to come out of WWE Clash of Champions looking stronger, which is a rare enough thing in WWE these days. Unfortunately, one man has to lose, and the other has to win, so the question going into Sunday is if Roman Reigns will become the new United States Champion or if Rusev will retain his championship.
It was previously reported through spoilers that Roman Reigns is expected to win the United States title at WWE Clash of Champions and have a lengthy run. Even more recently, it has been reported that WWE officials have purposefully kept Reigns out of the WWE Universal title picture because they’re focused on building new stars. Honestly, that piece of news tells you everything you need to know for Sunday night.
If WWE is trying to keep him out of the WWE World title picture, a run with the U.S. Championship is an excellent way to build the prestige of that title, keep Reigns busy, and potentially build him momentum for when WWE officials think the time is right to bring him back into the WWE Universal title hunt.
There is a lot that Reigns can do with the United States Championship. Obviously, the feud with Rusev may last for a few more months, but there will be many new challengers in Raw’s mid-card to face him for the brand’s only other singles championship. For example, Cesaro is rumored to be getting a “championship opportunity” very soon. Cesaro vs. Reigns sounds like a great feud for Raw throughout the fall.
The bottom line is Roman Reigns is likely to win the U.S. title at WWE Clash of Champions, but WWE could pull a swerve. They may book Rusev to keep the title for a little while longer. Eventually, the title will be given to Reigns. It’ll be good for him, Raw’s mid-card and the WWE Universe may cut him some slack.
