iOS 10.0.2: Update Released For Headphone Shutoff Bug
The iOS 10.0.2 update has been released to fix a problem on the not-even-month old iPhone 7 by Apple.
Word of the new iOS 10.0.2 mobile operating system began floating just days after the iPhone 7 release as many users were reporting that the new iOS 10 and iOS 10.0.1 were bricking their phones. But there was another problem with the iOS 10 operating system which necessitated the iOS 10.0.2 update, according to The Verge.
“The bug was reported soon after the iPhone 7’s launch last week as customers began getting acclimated to life without a headphone jack,” The Verge reported. “Apple said it would address the problem with a software update, and to the company’s credit, that happened very, very fast.”
As for the problem, it appeared that the physical controls for lighting-connected headphones would stop working if the phone had not been used in a while. As you could imagine, it was maddening for several users. As a result, Apple pushed the iOS 10.0.2 update to iPhone users in rather short order.
So what else does the iOS 10.0.2 update provide users? Forbes took a look and asked the question, “Should you update to iOS 10.0.2?”
“Unlike the monstrous iOS 10 update (and its mass of secret features), iOS 10.0.2 is primarily a bug fix with its main focus being a patch for the iPhone 7 audio bug Apple recently confirmed:
- Addresses an issue that could prevent headphone audio controls from temporarily not working.
- Resolves an issue that caused Photos to quit for some users when turning on iCloud Photo Library.
- Fixes an issue that prevented enabling some app extensions.”
So the verdict from Forbes on whether to update to iOS 10.0.2 is actually mixed. For users operating on anything less than an iPhone 7, it suggests there is very little reason to update immediately. But if you are an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus user, there is more urgency in updating to iOS 10.0.2.
“With any luck iOS 10.0.2 will continue what has so far proved to be an extremely smooth start for iOS 10. And iPhone 7 owners hit by the Lightning audio bug would be well advised to install it immediately,” Forbes said. “For others, however, there is no need to rush. iOS 10.0.2 brings no major new features and no high profile security updates.”
As the Inquisitr previously reported, there was the issue of jailbroken iPhones being “bricked” when updating to iOS 10.0.1. It appears the problem may be solved with iOS 10.0.2, but it is not a certainty. Due to the nature of how things have gone in the past with iOS 10.0.1, it is likely wise for jailbroken iOS 10 users to wait before updating their iPhones.
Still missing from the iOS 10.0.2 update was a product design that many have speculated is a true flaw — the lack of a slide feature to unlock the iPhone. At a store in New York the other day, this reporter observed several users attempting to operate the new iPhone 7 but encountering frustration due to the lack of a slide feature. It remains to be seen whether Apple coders and designers will cede the design feature and bring it back in future updates beyond iOS 10.0.2.
As for sales of the iPhone 7 — regardless of the iOS 10.0.2 update — USA Today reports that it is either boom or bust, depending on location. At a flagship Apple store in Manhattan, this reporter was told there was plenty of stock.
“Analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray said iPhone 7 stormed out of the gates in its opening weekend with 14.3 million unit sales, up 10% from the debut of iPhone 6S a year earlier,” USA Today reported, despite so-called “soft” traffic in Europe, with sales down as much as 6 percent in the Eurozone.
