‘Van Helsing’ Brings A Unique Twist To This New Vampire Series [Mild Spoilers]

In the world of horror enthusiasts, the legendary name of Van Helsing is synonymous with daring and fearless vampire hunters. Hidden Remote shares that Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton) is the daughter of the legendary Abraham Van Helsing and she finds herself resurrected into a post-apocalyptic future. She discovers that vampires have taken over the world, and it is now up to her to lead what remains of the human resistance.

Due to a series of environmental catastrophes, including major volcanic eruptions, the sky has become darker and this allows vampires to emerge from their underworld lairs. They quickly take control in the new, post-apocalyptic world, and the remaining humans desperately need someone who can step up and save them before it’s too late.

After spending five years in a coma, Vanessa wakes up to find the world as she knew it no longer exists. The first thing she wants to do is find her daughter, but it isn’t long before she realizes that the unique composition of her blood gives her the ability to turn a vampire back into a human again. According to The Futon Critic, Van Helsing is also immune to a vampire’s bite, and this makes her the last real hope for the human race. Her unique abilities also put a large target on her back as she must learn to fend off vampires while searching for her daughter.

Viewers will quickly discover that Van Helsing is not a typical vampire series. Besides Vanessa and her ability to change vampires back into humans, there are very distinct types of vampires. The Ancients have been around for a very long time and have found ways to adapt and to deal with humanity. The Ferals are a little more wild, they have fed mostly on animal blood in order to survive and they have more animalistic features.

When she awakens, Vanessa Van Helsing meets Axel (Jonathan Scarfe), a military man tasked with protecting her. He guards the comatose Van Helsing in the barricaded hospital that houses other human survivors, protecting her from any threats that may come their way. Once Van Helsing awakens and is brought up to date on what has happened, Axel will have to decide if he is going to continue to offer his aid to Vanessa as she searches for her daughter.

Sam (Christopher Heyerdahl) is another survivor and he is deaf, but he has defied the odds and has managed to stay alive. He is not mute, but speaks very little and only when he has something important to say. The cast information on Syfy’s Van Helsing page describes Sam as someone who is always watching, evaluating, and waiting. Any vampires who cross his path better beware.

John (David Cubitt) is an angry and impulsive man who often acts first and thinks later. That impulsive trait might keep him alive in a world full of hostile vampires, but it doesn’t make it easy for John to interact with his human counterparts.

Doc (Rukiya Bernard) was once a brilliant scientist and she was turned in the early days of the vampire rising. Despite her violent nature, her colleague Axel has been responsible for keeping her alive and safe. Axel will most likely ask Van Helsing to change Doc back, she is someone they definitely want and need on their side. She is probably the only one left who can help them understand what is so special about Vanessa Van Helsing’s unique blood.

Dmitri (Paul Johansson) is one of the most powerful vampires in the world, and he immediately realizes Van Helsing is a threat to his empire. He will do anything to stop her, and he has the resources needed to eliminate virtually any danger. Vanessa Van Helsing and her allies will also have to contend with Julius (Aleks Paunovic), who is one of the top vampires in Seattle. He is known as power-hungry, aggressive, and always thirsting for blood.

When Flesh (Vincent Gale) became a vampire, his humanity completely disappeared. He had no problems feasting on the blood of those he once cared for, but Van Helsing changes everything. After biting Vanessa Van Helsing, he becomes human once again, and now he must learn to deal with the guilt of what he once was and what he did.
