NFL Rumors: Jeff Fisher Contract Extended By Los Angeles Rams
Job security is something that all NFL head coaches want. Jeff Fisher is reportedly finalizing a contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams, as reported by FanSided. The deal will enable him to remain as the head coach of the franchise for an additional three seasons.
Jeff Fisher has been in the process of negotiating a new contract with the Los Angeles Rams for several weeks now. Talks with owner Stan Kroenke were said to have been going really well. However, doubt started to creep in as a new deal was not announced as sooner as people thought it would be.
Even further doubt was cast after the first game of the regular season for the Los Angeles Rams. It was a brutal thrashing by the San Francisco 49ers; a team that is expected to be near the bottom of the NFL rankings this season. The Rams were beaten 28-0 in humiliating fashion.
Jeff Fisher signed on with the Los Angeles Rams back in 2012. Since then, he has failed to produce a winning record in four seasons. That has led many NFL fans to wonder how he has managed to avoid the hot seat for as long as he has. It also made people wonder why the Rams wanted to extend his contract.
One of the things that make Jeff Fisher stand out is the fact that he is so good on the defensive side of the ball. During his 17 seasons with the Tennessee Titans, he managed to put together some pretty good units. Now, Fisher has created a pretty dominant defense for the Los Angeles Rams.
Where Jeff Fisher struggles is on the offensive side of the ball. He has failed to consistently produce a unit that can move the ball and put up points. Winning is going to be hard until that problem is resolved.
On offense, Jeff Fisher is an old-school NFL coach. He prefers to run the football and methodically eat up the clock. Fortunately for the Los Angeles Rams, they have a bruising running back in Todd Gurley. He is the prototype when it comes power football.
The big concern for the Los Angeles Rams is whether or not Jeff Fisher will be able to adapt to the modern NFL style because the team spent the first overall draft pick on Jared Goff. The former California Golden Bears star can be a franchise quarterback, but he will need a more wide open offense.
The Los Angeles Rams are expected to sell the contract extension as stability for the franchise. Jeff Fisher is a native of the city. He also starred as a safety for the USC Trojans. None of that will mean much to the fan base if the team is not able to start winning more games.
It will be interesting to see how the contract extension affects what Jeff Fisher does with the quarterback position. Since he has more job security now, he might opt to take an even slower approach to developing Jared Goff. Fisher plans to keep Case Keenum as the starter for now, as reported by NFL.com.
Against the San Francisco 49ers, Case Keenum threw two interceptions and was not yanked from the field. The next game is against the Seattle Seahawks, which boasts one of the best secondaries in the NFL with Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, and Earl Thomas intimidating opposing receivers
Jeff Fisher is nine losses away from being the NFL coach with the most losses in history. If and when that does happen, it will be done as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams thanks to the contract extension.
