Patrick Dempsey’s Hilarious Blunder On Australian TV, And How He Resurrected His Marriage

Patrick Dempsey, best known for portraying Dr. Derek Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, seems to consistently entertain his audiences by recurrently playing an “awkward charmer” in most of his comedy films. Moreover, his character in Grey’s Anatomy was featured in some of the most awkward scenes on the medical drama.

Now, Patrick Dempsey can be seen bringing his on-screen humor to real life, most notably when he faced an embarrassing moment when he hilariously messed up while trying to speak in an Australian accent on an Australian television breakfast show.

News Australia reports that Patrick Dempsey and Renée Zellweger appeared on Channel Nine’s Today program to promote Bridget Jones’s Baby, their upcoming movie, to Australian audiences.

While interviewing the American celebrities, the show’s hosts curiously encouraged the duo to try speaking in an Australian accent. While Renée made a pretty good effort at speaking in an Australian accent, Patrick Dempsey went one step further in attempting to connect with his Australian fans by using the term “traveler,” which he thought meant a beer that is taken for the way home.

Unfortunately, the Grey’s Anatomy star got his terms dramatically mixed up, as the word he was looking for was “roadie,” and “traveler” means something else entirely. In a hilarious turn of events, “traveler” is an Australian slang term that refers to an erection experienced while traveling on public transport. Indeed, at that moment Patrick Dempsey lived up to his on-screen personas that have made him so famous.

Besides his talent, the Enchanted actor credits his co-stars and other team members for contributing towards his success. While promoting Bridget Jones’s Baby during a Facebook Live interview, the actor revealed that the pilot episode of Grey’s Anatomy was his favorite episode, as it inspired a sense of discovery in him by helping him to bond with his co-stars.

Patrick Dempsey also gave due credit to the show’s music directors who have consistently delivered an emotional background score, pairing beautifully with the storyline. According to Entertainment Weekly, Patrick Dempsey recognized the collective efforts of Grey’s Anatomy‘s entire crew for making the medical drama so amazing.

“Everybody had great moments. You realize how powerful an ensemble can be, and it was the collective that made it successful, not one individual.”

Apart from being thankful to the production crew, Patrick Dempsey is also appreciative of his family whom he loves dearly. In fact, the actor’s family has been very supportive of the busy actor who also keenly follows his passion for car racing while pursuing his hectic film career.

So it was natural for Patrick Dempsey’s fans to be alarmed when the actor voiced his intention to end his 15-year marriage to Jillian Dempsey. Even though he appeared serious about filing for divorce, the actor himself was startled to discover that his marriage was crumbling because he was not able to devote much time to his family, mainly due to his hobbies and professional career.

Realizing that it was high time to take responsibility for his marriage, the Made of Honor actor decided to make a conscientious effort to save his marriage. Scared by the prospect of a facing a divorce, Patrick Dempsey sought the help of marriage counselors to work through his marriage problems. Jillian, too, was more than willing to work with counselors to repair their relationship, as neither party was particularly happy with parting ways.

In the actor’s opinion, the counseling played a vital role in rejuvenating his relationship with his wife, with whom he shares three children. Through their professional help, Patrick Dempsey reportedly realized the importance of prioritizing family over work and other professional commitments. According to People magazine, the Grey’s Anatomy actor encourages other squabbling couples to resolve their differences by citing his marriage as an example.

“Jill and I decided it was time to work on our issues and improve. We wanted to be role models for our kids like, okay, if you have differences, you can work them out.”

Patrick Dempsey has also revealed that open communication and a healthy sex life play equally important roles in a successful marriage.
