‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 13 Spoilers: Owen’s Sister Back From The Dead? Shonda Rhimes Weighs In
Will Season 13 of Grey’s Anatomy see a character brought back from the dead? Spoilers hint that Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) sister, who was thought to be dead, might be returning next season. Will Owen finally be reunited with his long lost sister?
Unreality TV is reporting that Shonda Rhimes hinted about the possibility of Owen’s sister coming back to life in Season 13. In fact, the showrunner admitted that she loves “a good sibling reveal” when asked about Owen’s sister. She also admitted that the questions surrounding her death are worth discussing.
“As for whether or not the sister is dead, I think that’s interesting people think that’s a question,” Rhimes admitted. “But that’s an interesting question.”
In Season 12, Grey’s Anatomy revealed that Riggs (Martin Henderson) was the last person to see Owen’s sister alive. Riggs saw her get inside a helicopter and fly away after a fight, but she never got to her destination. The helicopter crashed in an unprotected military zone — Owen’s sister was an Army medic — and everyone onboard was presumed dead.
The fact that Riggs was married to Owen’s sister and that she disappeared under mysterious circumstances created a lot of friction between Riggs and Owen. The two men only started to patch up their relationship towards the end of Season 12.
The bad blood between the characters is expected to continue next season, especially now that Riggs is involved with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). According to Wet Paint, the reappearance of Owen’s sister might even make things worse between him and Riggs.
The two doctors fought pretty much all season long but started to move past their problems by the season finale. If Owen’s sister arrives back on the scene, then it might drag up all of their past issues once again.
That being said, Henderson previously revealed that Riggs and Owen will start to repair their relationship in the coming season. Admittedly, nothing ever stays peaceful on Grey’s Anatomy, which means anything is possible.

Meanwhile, fans are speculating that Owen’s sister might return in light of his wedding with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). After all, Scorsone teased fans by saying that “a big explosive drama” will happen at the beginning of Season 13. Bringing a character back from the dead certainly falls into the category of an explosive drama.
Could Scorsone be talking about the return of Owen’s sister?
“Immediately on the tail of Amelia and Owen’s wedding, there’s a big explosive drama that’s happening right away,” Scorsone shared during an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. “On Grey’s Anatomy it could be a literal explosion, but in this case, it’s emotionally explosive. It’s going to be a key story this year that a lot of people are going to be interested in.”
Scorsone’s comments don’t appear directly linked to Owen’s sister, Megan, though the actress admitted that she could pop up later in the season.
For now, fans can expect Season 13 to center on the lives of the show’s original characters, including Meredith, Alex (Justin Chambers), Richard (James Pickens Jr.), and Bailey (Chandra Wilson).
“There is going to be a lot of checking in with the original cast; we love them so much and there has been such a renaissance with the show that it’s nice to focus on the core pieces that have been there since the very beginning,” Scorsone added.
Unless more spoilers are revealed in the coming weeks, fans will have to wait until the new season of Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC to find out if Owen’s sister will come back from the dead.
The first episode of Season 13, titled “Undo,” is scheduled to premiere September 22 on ABC. Check out the teaser below, and let us know what you think in the comments.
