Britney Spears Takes Over Mall With Ellen DeGeneres [Video]
Ellen DeGeneres is a big fan of malls, so taking her guest Britney Spears on a shopping trip seemed like the best idea the talk show host could come up with, especially since Ellen felt Spears could use tips on getting the most out of her star power. DeGeneres explained to Britney that a part of being “a very famous celebrity” is being able to take over shopping malls and doing whatever she might want, which led to an adventure for Spears and DeGeneres at Westfield Fashion Square.

Los Angeles Times shares news of the adventure DeGeneres and Spears had, while visiting Westfield Fashion Square, which began even before the duo entered the stores. Ellen encouraged Britney to run stop signs and park her powder blue muscle car in the middle of the road, directly in front of the mall’s entrance, because that’s just a part of being a celebrity. The pair even slipped ahead of other mall patrons with DeGeneres assuring the shoppers it was okay, because both Spears and herself are famous celebrities.
Once inside DeGeneres and Spears made their way to the children’s play area, where Ellen and Britney both signed T-shirts and spoke with star-struck fans. Ellen also took the opportunity to offer some celebrity-style wisdom to the parents in the play area.
“We like to start people early to understand what’s important in life. And that is money and celebrity,” said Ms. DeGeneres.
“Parents, I can’t stress to you enough,” Ellen continued, “start putting them on diets… If you want to be taken care of by your children, start auditioning them now.”
Elsewhere on their journey through the mall, Ellen and Britney took turns kicking and punching a store display punching back and taking whatever products caught their eye, because, as DeGeneres explained to her guest, it was their privilege as celebrities.
“She’s a celebrity. It’s OK,” Ms. DeGeneres told one cashier, as Spears took some apparel from one store.
DeGeneres and Spears followed up the lifting of their celebrity-style discounts by conning free ice cream (and sprinkles for Ellen) from a Ben & Jerry’s counter, eating at a Pottery Barn dining room set, and sleeping in the store display of a bedroom.
Britney Spears’ Glory Debuts At No. 3

While Ms. Spears was enjoying the day at the mall with Ellen, her new album, Glory, was climbing the charts. USA Today reports that Spears’ latest offering debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart with Nielson Music revealing that Glory has already sold 111,000 copies. Britney’s new album is already outselling her last album, Britney Jean, which debuted at No. 4 with 107,000 copies sold in December 2013.
David Bakula, who serves as Nielsen Entertainment’s senior vice president of analytics, says these numbers are par for the course for someone of Spears’ popularity and experience.
“Obviously, we’re far past the (peak) days of Britney, where hit single after hit single drove album sales.”
Bakula adds that Britney’s “Make Me” single, which climbed to No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, is the driving force behind Glory, even though that single hasn’t rocketed to the top in the same way past Britney Spears hits have done.
Ms. Spears has previously claimed the coveted No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 with 2011’s Femme Fatale. Britney has also reached No. 1 with Circus in 2008, 2003’s In the Zone, 2001’s Britney, and her 1999 debut … Baby One More Time.
The limited success may also have something to do with the way in which Britney Spears has promoted Glory. Billboard senior editor Jem Aswad notes that Spears limited the fanfare on the release of the album and suspects the music on Glory specifically targets Britney’s more loyal fanbase.
“Britney’s become one of those artists that are almost heritage artists,” Aswad says. “Usually when artists are in their icon phase, they’re not having as many hit singles. They’re mostly touring and putting out records. It’s the level The Rolling Stones are at — they put out new songs and nobody really cares. Britney’s not to that point yet, but icon status means the hit singles are a bit less important.”
