Colleen Stan: Lifetime’s ‘Girl In The Box’ And ID’s ‘Bound In A Box’ Tell Emotionally Disturbing Tale Of Hitchhiker-Turned-Sex Slave

Colleen Stan will have her true story dramatized in the Lifetime movie Girl in the Box and recounted in a one-hour documentary on Investigation Discovery, titled Bound in a Box: The True Story of Colleen Stan. In addition to Lifetime’s movie and ID’s true crime documentary based on the Colleen Stan case, Lifetime Television will also provide a documentary right after the premiere of Girl in the Box. Colleen Stan was a hitchhiker who was kidnapped, tortured, and forced to live in a box as a sex slave for almost a decade in the 1970s.

Movie Synopsis For Girl In The Box

Twenty-year-old Colleen Stan is living the life of her dreams: total freedom to go anywhere she wants. Always wanting to explore, she normally arrives at her destinations by hitchhiking. But when she sets out to hitchhike her way to California, she accepts a ride from a friendly-looking family who ends up kidnapping her and sending her down a winding path of darkness, sadistic sex, and despair as she lives her life in a coffin-like box for the next seven years.

Girl in the Box and Investigation Discovery’s Bound in a Box are based on Colleen Stan and her abductors, Janice and Cameron Hooker. The missing hitchhiker’s nightmare began in May of 1977, when she attempted to hitchhike her way from Oregon to Westwood, California.

As she made her way down the highway, she was approached by at least two cars. She passed up two of the rides because she didn’t have a good feeling about them. However, when she saw Cameron and Janice Hooker with their baby, she believed that they were a nice family who would provide her with safe transportation to Westwood, according to the documentary Bound In a Box.

Instead of taking her to Westwood, Cameron Hooker had sex on his mind. His plan was to kidnap her, engage in sadistic sex with her, and keep her forever.

Cameron Hooker’s plan almost worked until his wife, Janice, who began studying the bible and going to church, decided to confess to her pastor that they had kidnapped a girl and kept her in a box as their sex slave for seven years, according to the Daily Mail.

By the time Janice Hooker confessed, Colleen Stan had already escaped and was living at home. Her story broke nationwide, and she became known as the “girl in the box.”

As you’ll see in the movie Girl in the Box, during Colleen Stan’s captivity, her worried family searched high and low for her and were never able to find any clues as to her whereabouts. She was eventually allowed to call and visit them. Colleen Stan’s story, which has now been made public, includes stories of physical and psychological torture, CBS News reports.
