Selena Gomez Targeted With Online Death Hoax After Canceling Her Revival Tour, #RIPSelena Trends

Selena Gomez is not dead — despite what fans may be seeing on Twitter.

Earlier this morning, just days after Gomez opted to cancel her “Revival World Tour,” the hash tag #RIPSelena began to trend. Luckily, however, the hashtag was unrelated to the “Same Old Love” singer and Gomez is still very much alive.

According to an article shared by The Reporter Times on September 6, the hashtag began to trend in the early hours of the morning on Tuesday and continued to trend for hours after that. In fact, the hashtag appeared in nearly 40,000 tweets and re-tweets, which led to tons of confusion and concern on the social media platform until it was revealed that the trend was actually in regard to the late singer Selena Quintanilla.

As fans may recall, Quintanilla was murdered by the president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar, on March 31, 1995.

“The report comes as a total shock to many, but it is actually just a case of mistaken identity,” Health Aim reported of the #RIPSelena hash tag on September 6. “Selena Gomez dead is just a plain rumor. The actress is alive and well, and is working on dealing with her mental and physical health.”

Last week, Selena Gomez announced that after about 4 months on tour, she would be taking some time off to deal with symptoms of lupus, which include anxiety, panic attacks, and depression. The announcement came just days after she and Justin Bieber were involved in a highly publicized feud on Instagram, which led Bieber to delete his account.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways,” Selena Gomez told People Magazine in a statement last Tuesday.

“I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges.”

Selena Gomez’s Revival World Tour was scheduled to continue until December.

“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she continued.

“Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues,” she continued.

Since Selena Gomez’s announcement was made, many reports have suggested the singer is not dealing with symptoms of Lupus, but rather a possible addiction to drugs. Still, a source close to the singer assured fans that her career break is “absolutely not” related to drugs — or alcohol. Instead, the source explained, Selena Gomez hadn’t been feeling like herself for months and wanted to address the issues to ensure her mental health.

Speaking to People Magazine, the source said Selena Gomez cleared her calendar through the rest of the year in an effort to make her future happiness a priority. The source also said that Gomez “didn’t want to leave any promoters at bay.”

Currently, it is unclear where Selena Gomez has gone, or how long she will remain there, but according to the source, she feels relieved after canceling her tour and is optimistic about her future.
