Spider-Man’s Suit Has One Major Flaw, According To Tom Holland
There are many important things to consider when adapting a comic book character to the big screen, but probably the most important element is the superhero suit itself. Marvel have a legendary line-up of superhero costumes, including Iron Man, Wolverine, Thor, Deadpool, the X-Men — the list of iconic suits goes on, but one of the more recognized suits on their impressive roster is the outfit worn by Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.
The suit’s iconic design has remained relatively untouched during its lengthy cinematic run, minus a few tweaks here and there, and there was no surprise at the minor uproar, as reported by Movie News Guide, when the newest incarnation of the suit was first revealed to the masses. The basic changes have since been explained away by Tony Stark’s involvement in Captain America: Civil War, and fans have seemed to take a liking to it since Spider-Man’s scene-stealing appearance in the Captain America sequel.
However, now it seems the star of Spider-Man: Homecoming has some issues with the suit itself. This week, the latest Peter Parker, Tom Holland, revealed that the suit had one major flaw during shooting.
Tom Holland recently partook in some charity work, and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation invited the 19-year-old actor to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to meet a group of sick children. Naturally, he came dressed as Spider-Man, much to the joy of the kids, but the actor also took a moment to talk about the suit that defines his character so, and he expressed one major flaw with the Spider-Man outfit.
“I break them quite a lot because I have to do a lot of stunts and flips and stuff, so they rip. So, I think, we have 20 suits, I think, that we alternate. This is, actually, what we would call a beauty suit, which means it’s ‘picture ready.’ And then we have a stunt suit, which isn’t as nice as this one.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming is still in production — Holland was taking a break from the filming of Jon Watts’ Spidey sequel — and it’s no surprise that the suit, or at least some of them, have fallen foul to a rip or two. The fact the studio has delicate beauty suits for the lighter work and durable stunt suits for the harder, more athletic dangerous shots, is a testament to the extreme nature of the role itself. Remember, Spider-Man is one of the agilest superheroes on Marvel’s roster, so expect a lot of flipping and web-slinging when Homecoming drops in cinemas come 2017. In honesty, with the evidence of the previous Spider-Man movies, it’s a surprise there were only 20 suits.
One thing clear to fans of the MCU is that Tom Holland is becoming the perfect Spider-Man. The role suits him perfectly, from his boyish naivety to his age and his natural charisma. Peter Parker has been played by many an actor, but Tom Holland seems to have it mastered to perfection. Sure, he’s only appeared in Civil War thus far, and he stole the show from the long-term Avengers in only 20 minutes of screen time, but you’d be hard-pressed to find any fan of the MCU who doesn’t look at Holland and see Peter Parker ripped straight from the comic book pages.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is a few months away yet, but already it’s looking to be another stellar Marvel movie. With Phase 3 now under way and Holland already suited to the role, you’ll have to look high and low to find a more suitable casting in the superhero genre. Not since Wolverine and Iron Man has an actor been cast so well. Let’s hope we’re not disappointed when Spidey makes his long-awaited return next year. And let’s hope he takes care of the remaining suits before then.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will swing into theaters on July 7, 2017.
