Odell Beckham Jr. Responds To Lena Dunham With The Class Of A Gentleman
Odell Beckham Jr. responded to Lena Dunham with the class of a gentleman. This comes after social media users turned out in force to defend him after she criticized him for not taking adequate notice of her at the Met Gala in May. She spoke of him in what many considered to be a negative light during an interview with Amy Schumer.
The girl famous for her starring role in HBO’s Girls yet again created controversy with her comments. Lena Dunham incited anger with her recent comments about Odell Beckham Jr. Apparently, the two were seated next to each other at the Met Gala in May. In Dunham’s newsletter with Jenni Konner, the Lenny Letter, she said in an interview with Amy Schumer that she picked up on a bad vibe from the football player. (Note: The interview contains graphic language.) She gave a detailed description of Beckham’s attitude toward her, according to the New York Daily News, and his opinion of her, although it seems the two of them never even spoke to each other.
“I was sitting next to Odell Beckham, Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards. He was like, ‘That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.’ It wasn’t mean – he just seemed confused. The vibe was very much like, ‘Do I want to f**k it? Is it wearing a… yep, it’s wearing a tuxedo. I’m going to go back to my cell phone.’ It was like we were forced to be together, and he literally was scrolling Instagram rather than have to look at a woman in a bow tie. I was like, ‘This should be called the Metropolitan Museum of Getting Rejected by Athletes.'”
Odell Beckham Jr. hardly had to say a word in his own defense as social media users flooded Twitter with their own opinions about the unfairness of her remarks. Dunham even issued an apology before he ever spoke up at all. While speaking to Complex, Odell Beckham Jr. finally had something to say when asked about Lena Dunham’s remarks about him. And what did he say when he did finally speak?
“I don’t have enough information to really speak on it. We’ll see what happens from there. I never want any problems with anybody in this world.”

Dunham definitely incited anger with her comments, but she likely didn’t expect the backlash she received. Twitter users spoke out by the dozens. When the comments flooded her Twitter account, she responded. Her response was an attempt to explain that her comments reflected her own insecurities, not Beckham’s behavior in any way.
“(Odell Beckham Jr.) is talented, stylish, seems super awesome and wasn’t into chatting with me at a fancy party. My story about him was clearly about my own insecurities as an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels and athletes. It’s not an assumption about who he is or an expectation of sexual attention. It’s my sense of humor, which has kept me alive for 30 years.”
In Dunham’s interview, Amy Schumer admitted she wasn’t exactly a fan of the gala. The actress/comedienne told Howard Stern last month it was “like a punishment.”

Odell Beckham didn’t respond to what Lena Dunham said about him at first, but plenty have spoken out in his defense. Dunham’s comments were said by social media users to reflect her own self-absorption. If a man pays attention to her, they say, he is sexualizing her. If he does not acknowledge her in a way she finds acceptable, he is unfairly judging her appearance and finding her lacking. Men can’t win in her presence, they say. Odell Beckham, Jr. didn’t stand a chance, according to his fans and her critics. Her hyper-criticism of men reflects poorly on feminism, according to the many feminists speaking out against her. They say her brand of feminism isn’t welcome.
As for Odell Beckham Jr., his only crime was apparently walking into the Met Gala and taking a seat, then scrolling through his phone, according to a report by TMZ. He apparently said nothing to Dunham, nor did he make any rude faces or gestures. According to her, it was what he didn’t say or do that revealed his opinion of her. Odell might have been wise in his choice to stay focused on his phone, as any conversation with her might have led to further criticism. If she drew so much from a simple glance and his non-action, what might she have said if he’d said anything she perceived as negative?
Beckham might have chosen not to rise to her insults because he’s been focused entirely on something else lately. His new line of sweatpants designed with David Helwani of twenty tees has been picked up exclusively by Bloomingdale’s. The line is called 13 x twenty, and he’s quite proud of it.
“You’ve got some distress in it. It’s comfortable. You can dress it up, you can dress it down, however you want to do it. It’s something that you can wear every day, and it looks good.”
When both designers were asked about the line of sweatpants appealing to a wide audience, including Lena Dunham herself, they responded with class.
“I’m sure she’ll look good in it,” Helwani said, then Beckham agreed, saying, “Absolutely.”
The high road, indeed.
What do you think? Did Lena Dunham’s behavior really deserve all the angry comments on social media, or is she being unfairly judged? Did Odell Beckham Jr. respond to Lena Dunham with the class of a gentleman? Please weigh in on the comments section below.
