Chris Evans Is No Longer Captain America?

Is Chris Evans hanging up his Captain America shield for good?

In Captain America: Civil War, Steve Rogers decided to quit the Avengers and officially became a government fugitive. Now, Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors behind Civil War, revealed that Rogers may have also left his shield behind when he parted ways with Iron Man. Does this mean that Captain America will join HYDRA next?

“I think him dropping that shield [at the end of the film] is him letting go of that identity,” Joe explained in an interview with the Huffington Post. “[It’s] him admitting that, certainly, the identity of Captain America was in conflict with the very personal choice that he was making.”

According to Digital Spy, additional comments from the directors were released on the official Blu-Ray version of Civil War.

Now, in the comics, Rogers joins HYDRA after severing ties with Iron Man, though it doesn’t seem like he will do the same in Avengers: Infinity War. In fact, Captain America is expected to help Thor, Iron Man, and the Guardians of the Galaxy in the upcoming film as they wage war against Thanos.

iTech Post reports that this is the reason why Captain America wasn’t killed off in Civil War. Apparently, the threat of Thanos taking over the universe will be enough to bring Cap out of retirement and join forces with the Avengers once again. However, will he return as Captain America?

With Rogers leaving behind his identity in Civil War, there is a strong possibility that Evans’ days as Cap are over. Instead, Just Jared reports that the actor’s character might take up the mantel as Nomad. Captain America did a similar thing in the comics after losing faith in the world. Rogers went by the name Nomad after he found out the government was sponsoring a terrorist group called the Secret Empire.

For now, it isn’t clear what will happen with Captain America and whether or not someone else will take up the shield in Avengers: Infinity War. In the meantime, fans will be treated to a few DVD extras with the Captain America: Civil War release on home video.

According to Mashable, the extras included a few comments from the Russo brothers about Chris Evans’ skills as an actor.

“He’s a crazy quick study,” Anthony revealed during a promo for the DVD release. “Insanely fast. There are fights we’ve pre-blocked on the set that are really complicated that he gets in one or two takes.”

“He’s a very good athlete,” Anthony continued. “A very gifted technical actor and he’s great with body movement and great with body control.”

Part of what made Civil War unique was the blend of a lot of superheroes into one movie. In fact, the film included some 11 heroes and featured two new characters, Black Panther and Spider-Man, all without losing focus.

“We try to be extremely meticulous,” Joe shared. “When we’re conceiving set pieces, we’re figuring out a way to organize it around our story and our characters in a very interesting or poignant way.”

Anthony couldn’t agree more.

“Joe and I are very disciplined about that… it’s a very focused process that starts at the script phase, goes through the shooting phase and well into post production,” he stated.

Unfortunately, the duo did not expand on their earlier comments about Captain America and what will happen to the character when the Avengers assemble on the big screens once again.

Fans can purchase the DVD and Blu-Ray edition of Captain America: Civil War on September 13, 2016. The film is released on digitally on September 2, 2016. Meanwhile, Avengers: Infinity War is expected to open in theaters in 2018.
