Episode 9 of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead saw the introduction of a possibly immune character, Alejandro. But, is he really immune to the bite of the infected, or is he just playing the game?
Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 2, Episode 9 (entitled “Los Muertos”) of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead . Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.
In the Walking Dead universe, the rule is if you are bitten by the undead you will turn. However, in Episode 9 (entitled “Los Muertos”) of Fear the Walking Dead , the newly introduced character, Alejandro (Paul Calderon), is apparently immune to the bite of the infected. Luciana (Danay Garcia) told Nick (Frank Dillane) that she witnessed the miracle when he questioned the validity of her claim. As a result of this immunity, a religious-like cult has started up in Tijuana involving Alejandro.
If Alejandro really is immune, then this opens up some exciting possibilities for not only Fear the Walking Dead , but its companion show, The Walking Dead . Perhaps there really is a cure for the undead? If one person is immune, then a cure could, potentially, be formulated from this immunity.
But this is not the first time immunity has been used as a protection mechanism in the Walking Dead universe. Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) told people that he knew how to formulate a cure so long as he safely reached to Washington. He was then protected by others clearly more capable of defending him — and themselves — from the undead. Eugene didn’t have the cure, but he was smart enough to realize he would never survive the apocalypse without the help and protection of others. As ComicBook points out, Alejandro is a pharmacist, not a fighter , but he is smart enough to know he needs help.
“As a pharmacist, Alejandro would be equipped for finding a cure better than most but he is probably lacking the skills to physically fight off threats face to face. Rallying the Tijuana community behind his fables of immunity is a great way to earn a following which would protect him in for the apocalyptic threats.”
When asked directly about Alejandro’s immunity, Fear the Walking Dead showrunner, Dave Erickson, revealed the true story would be unraveled at some point in Season 2.
“The truth of Alejandro and the question of faith is something we will play out over the course of the season, and we’ll address it ultimately,” he told Entertainment Weekly .
Alejandro could be bluffing his way using a bite wound to the shoulder as proof of his immunity. After all, a still taken from Episode 9 of Fear the Walking Dead shows a bite that is not only very deep, but mostly healed. Considering Fear the Walking Dead is new to the onset of the infected, it looks like this wound could have occurred prior to the outbreak.
Also, if Alejandro really was bitten and is known to be immune to the infection, why are they sacrificing others before knowing for certain they are not immune also? Why are people not questioning this as a result? Only by tuning into further episodes of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead will reveal all.
