‘Girl Meets World’ Star Rowan Blanchard Discusses Show’s Fate — Will It Be Renewed?

Girl Meets World cast member Rowan Blanchard realizes her days as a Disney Channel starlet may be numbered as the TV show has yet to be renewed for a fourth season.

Disney — which has consistently said would wait until the end of the year before deciding on the fate of Girl Meets World — may cancel the popular show due to its maturing story lines, Movie News Guide explained. As the characters have grown, the article explained, so too have the themes and character complexity. Disney targets a younger demographic, making this change one less palatable for its target audience.

Girl Meets World fans were recently convinced that Rowan Blanchard had teased them with the answer, according to another media source. In a cryptic tweet, Rowan Blanchard excited her followers by talking about a recently “finalized” item that Girl Meets World fans took to mean the TV show had been renewed for fourth season.

However, that is not the case. The media outlet speculated that the tweet was aimed at a side project Rowan Blanchard enjoys with a publication called Paper. The New York-based fashion magazine has run the Girl Meets World star’s work in the past, and Rowan Blanchard has considered writing in her future.

Rowan Blanchard confirmed in an interview with SheKnows that she was not sure if Girl Meets World would continue for a fourth season. Adding that she knew as much as the fans knew, Rowan Blanchard expressed her hope that Girl Meets World would continue deep into 2017.

“We are hoping for a Season 4, obviously, because we want to continue our story, and I feel like it’s an important story to tell. But as of right now, we just finished [filming] Season 3 and we’re still waiting on the word. But we do have more episodes coming out this year that air into early 2017, so we’re covered for a little bit.”

Outside of Rowan Blanchard, other members of the Girl Meets World cast and crew have been vocal about the renewal efforts. The writers for the TV show have also been forward-thinking in their efforts to return for a fourth season for Girl Meets World, sharing online messages encouraging fans to write letters of support to Disney.

Renewing Girl Meets World doesn’t necessarily mean the show would return to Disney, either. The Disney owns multiple television channels in its TV portfolio, giving the parent company flexibility to move the show away from a younger demographic market to one that could handle more mature story lines.

Such a move could be made to Freeform, formerly called ABC Family. One blogger made the case that Rowan Blanchard could take her acting talents on Girl Meets World — along with the show’s more mature high school content — to the channel as the template for the show already exists with hits like Baby Daddy and Young & Hungry already on Freeform.

Earlier this month, rumors that Rowan Blanchard was the reason Girl Meets World had yet to be renewed began surfacing, according to Seventeen. Rowan Blanchard met those rumors head-on, tweeting a note to explain her side of the controversy.

“I don’t usually comment on anything like this, but I have spent the last half hour crying, confused as to why someone can stoop to such a low level to try to ruin the life of someone they don’t personally [know]. Of course none of that is true, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt… I would never fake a friendship. The thought of that makes me sick.”

Even Sabrina Carpenter quickly jumped to her Girl Meets World co-star’s defense. Posting a picture of the two, Sabrina Carpenter suggested that Rowan Blanchard was as close off screen as the two were on it.
