Alison Carey: Inside Her Troubled Relationship With Estranged Sister Mariah

Alison Carey, the older sister of pop superstar Mariah Carey, has been arrested on suspected prostitution charges. The Daily Freeman reports that Alison Carey, 55, was arrested following an undercover police investigation into allegations that she was soliciting money in exchange for sexual favors at a Saugerties, New York, hotel. Carey was arrested after soliciting an undercover police officer who was posing as a client.

In a bizarre twist, Alison’s internet ad for her services included phrasing that was similar to the lyrics to her sister Mariah Carey’s 1995 hit song, “Fantasy.”

Alison Carey has a history of drug addiction and has long been rumored to be suffering from serious medical problems, including HIV. Police urged anyone who had an unprotected sexual encounter with Alison to see a doctor.

This is not Alison Carey’s first arrest for alleged prostitution. More than a decade ago, the New York Post reported that Alison Carey solicited an undercover officer for sex on a boat at West Shore Marina. At the time, most of Alison’s family and friends had given up on her, but a source said the singer didn’t want to turn her back on her struggling sister.

“At this stage, most everyone else in the family has had it with Alison,” a Carey family insider said.

“But Mariah isn’t one to give up on people. Unfortunately, she is having to learn that you can’t help someone who doesn’t want to be helped.”

While the sisters tried to reconcile, Carey’s people say she financed many rehab stints for Alison, to no avail. Alison Carey even reportedly burned through her own windfall, a $1 million inheritance from her father. An insider told the Post Alison racked up $15,000 tabs at ritzy hotels and drained her own bank account very quickly.

“It was very painful for the entire family to see her burn through what Alfred had worked his whole life for. He had wanted Alison to be taken care of.”

Earlier this year, Alison Carey recorded a disturbing video, begging her sister to help her.

“Mariah, I love you and I desperately need your help. Please don’t abandon me like this,” Alison said in the video.

A rep for Mariah Carey told the Daily Mail that the Grammy-winning singer has given Alison a lot of help over the years, to the tune of “hundreds of thousands of dollars.” Mariah has also said that she has helped Alison’s grown kids.

“Through the years, Mariah has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supporting Alison and her children. In fact, Mariah has supported her extended family for over two decades.”

Still, these now-estranged siblings had problems even before Mariah’s massive fame. Alison Carey and her sister grew up in a broken home after their parents, Patricia and Alfred, divorced when the future superstar was 3-years-old. Mariah and older brother Morgan lived with their mother while Alison lived with their father. By the time she was 16, Alison Carey was a married, high-school dropout.

In a 2012 interview with the Sun, Alison Carey said she took care of her sister when they were broke and living in New York.

“When Mariah did not have food, it was me who came and filled up
her fridge,” Alison said.

“When she did not have clean clothes, I would pay for her laundry. Mariah and our mother were so broke once they got kicked out of their apartment. I paid for a new place. I also rented the vintage Rolls-Royce that took Mariah to her first audition aged 16 or 17.”

While Alison Carey was a bridesmaid at her sister’s 1993 wedding to Tommy Mottola, things got especially rocky shortly after that.

Now, more than 20 years later, the older Carey sibs have called Mariah out as Alison reportedly fights HIV. Morgan Carey previously told the Sun that Alison was in need of brain and spinal surgery, and that she needed to tap into some of Mariah’s millions to help cover her sky-high medical bills.

Morgan Carey even pointed a finger at his wealthy sister, telling the Daily Mail he blames her for some of Alison’s troubles.

“Because Mariah has not found it in her heart to help Alison get the care she requires, there are times when Alison forgets or is unable to take her medication and this sometimes precipitates problematic behavior. Alison was institutionalized for observation after being found wandering in the street barefoot and partially undressed, causing the police to be concerned.”

Mariah Carey is currently headlining a Las Vegas residency and has not commented on her sister Alison’s latest arrest.
