New Netflix Movies, TV, Originals For September: ‘Narcos’ Season 2, Plus Marvel Superhero Luke Cage Gets Own Series
Netflix announced its September 2016, lineup of new movies, TV series and Netflix original programming on Friday, and the new roster bookends the month with not one, but two of the most hotly anticipated Netflix original series of the year.
On Friday, September 2, Netflix viewers return to the bad old days of the 1980s and the reign of ruthless Colombian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar with Season Two of the acclaimed, based-on-fact thriller Narcos.
The 10-episode second season again features Brazilian star Wagner Moura (pictured at the top of this page) returning to his Golden Globe nominated role as Escobar, who ended Season One by escaping from his custom-made prison in the Colombian jungle.
This time around, DEA Agent Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) must overcome the resistance of the Colombian army to track down the drug lord and capture him again — or kill him.
Closing out the month, on September 30, the third series in Netflix current Marvel Universe mega-storyline — following Seasons One and Two of Daredevil and the debut season of Jessica Jones — Luke Cage debuts.

The “Hero For Hire,” is played once again — as he was in Jessica Jones — by 40-year-old TV veteran Mike Colter, previously best-known for his role on the CBS drama The Good Wife.
The September Netflix lineup also offers a bonanza for fans of classic older films, with all four entries in the Jaws film series hitting the streaming service on the first day of the month, including the classic 1975 original, directed by a young Steven Spielberg.

Also on September 1, one of the last great Hollywood westerns, marking the end of an era when the western was one of the most popular and reliable genres in American film — True Grit. The 1969 version of the Charles Portis novel (which was remade by Joel and Ethan Coen in 2011) gave the legendary John Wayne his only Oscar-winning performance, as the crusty, one-eyed gunfighter Rooster Coburn. Check out the original, 1969 trailer for True Grit, in the following video.
