Police in Albuquerque, New Mexico, have confirmed that they are investigating the apparent murder of a 10-year-old girl in the Northwest portion of the city. The child’s name has not been made public, but KOAT 7 is reporting that the New Mexico 10-year-old was brutally killed, dismembered, and found wrapped in a blanket or sheet just this morning by law enforcement responding to the tragic scene.
According to reports, which are very preliminary at this stage as New Mexico police are still investigating the crime, there was also smoke coming from the house where the 10-year-old’s body was found. Neighbors say that the little girl just celebrated her 10th birthday yesterday.
Reportedly, New Mexico police are not releasing the name of the 10-year-old to the public yet because her next of kin have yet to receive notification of her tragic death.
While little is being “officially” released by the Albuquerque Police Department at this early stage, a police source has reached out to local media. Reportedly, the apartment where the brutal murder of the New Mexico 10-year-old reportedly took place is occupied by a couple who made the (apparently tragic) decision to allow a female family member to stay at their home after being released from jail.
The New Mexico couple reportedly told law enforcement that the unnamed family member, allegedly a cousin, started to behave strangely before bed Tuesday night. In the middle of the night, the couple was allegedly awakened by the female cousin who asked them “if they believed in god.” The couple reportedly answered “yes,” at which time the cousin (and suspect in the murder of the New Mexico 10-year-old) began beating the pair with a tool.
The couple ran from the house and called emergency services for help, but apparently they left the New Mexico 10-year-old behind when they fled the scene. When authorities got to the scene of the New Mexico tragedy, they reportedly saw smoke and found the dismembered dead body of the 10-year-old wrapped in a sheet or blanket.
The suspect in the murder of the New Mexico 10-year-old reportedly tried to escape the scene; she was apprehended by police and remains in custody.
According to Albuquerque police, multiple different New Mexico crime units are investigating the unthinkable murder, including detectives from the Violent Crimes and Crimes Against Children units.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that neighbors of the New Mexico 10-year-old are shocked, saddened, and horrified by what happened in their quiet complex. One such neighbor is Amanda Wilson, whose daughter was reportedly the “best friend” of the murdered 10-year-old. According to Wilson, officers confirmed to her that the scene of the crime that resulted in the death of the New Mexico 10-year-old was “grisly” and that the little girl had been “violently killed.”
“She was super outgoing, friendly, always asking people to play with her.”
Albuquerque police have remained tight-lipped about the investigation into the death of the New Mexico 10-year-old. They are not saying if or how the little girl was related to the couple who lived in the apartment. He did confirm that police believe that this was an isolated incident and that the suspect believed to be responsible for the murder of the New Mexico 10-year-old is off the streets.
“The offender is in custody and there is no further threat to the community.”
Police are reporting that their murder suspect may have picked the 10-year-old up from the bus stop yesterday and that they believe that the woman had been in touch with one or both of the girl’s parents. Investigators are reportedly searching through the suspect’s phone for more information.
Tragically, though the New Mexico 10-year-old just had a birthday yesterday, her party had reportedly been scheduled for today.
