Kate Gosselin and her family have been in the spotlight since she first opened her home up to the world more than 10 years ago. The TLC reality show Jon and Kate Plus 8, and then Kate Plus 8 after she divorced Jon in 2009, documented their hectic lives while trying to raise twins Mady and Cara and sextuplets Aaden, Alexis, Collin, Hannah, Leah and Joel.
The Gosselin family has had their fair share of struggles, with the most recent being Kate’s decision to send her now 12-year-old son Collin away from their home to receive help in reaching his “full potential.”

“Collin has special needs,” Kate told People Magazine. “[There’s] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things. This has been a struggle we’ve had for a very long time, and it’s one I’ve dealt with on my own. I’ve felt very alone in this. By the same token, it’s not something that has only impacted me or him — our entire family has been impacted.”
According to Gosselin, Collin is currently “enrolled in a program that is helping him learn the skills he needs to be the best him he can be. We miss him so much, so it’s been hard because there is a huge hole in our family without him here. But it comforts us to know he’s where he needs to be right now, and I can feel good about that.”

Kate added, “When your kids go to college, do you miss them? Yes, but you reassure yourself that they are getting so much out of it. And that’s the same sort of investment I feel like I’ve made Collin’s future.”
According to a 2010 report from People, Collin has been dealing with “personal” issues for years now. At the time, Collin and Alexis left their school after Kate was told the school could no longer meet their needs. Gosselin said her children were suffering from post-divorce anger and were acting out in school in response.
“[Collin] was upset and saying things out of frustration — he’d crumple his papers and throw them on the floor,” she said at the time, adding that Collin and Alexis were both were seeing a therapist and “doing much, much better.”

Aside from discussing her son Collin and his special needs, Kate Gosselin also opened up about her stardom and her biggest regret while filming Kate Plus 8.
“If I could go back, I wouldn’t spend so much time worrying about the messes and the obsessive compulsiveness and needing to be so in control,” she said. “I would spend more time nibbling little feet and cuddling up. I worried about so many things I just didn’t need to be worrying about when they were still so young, and I came on way too strong. I should have just rolled around on the floor some. I wouldn’t have melted down as much.”
