How Seth Rogen Brought ‘Sausage Party’ To Life, And Why The Orgy Scene Was Scaled Back

Seth Rogen promises a “dirty” orgy in Sausage Party, according to The Daily Beast. The 34-year-old comedic actor revealed what it was like passing the extremely R-rated animated film through film companies and inviting stars to voice the naughty animated food products.

Sausage Party, which opened last weekend, was created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, the hilarious duo who co-directed Superbad, The Interview, and This Is the End. But this time, the two present an even dirtier movie with animated food products craving sex.

In the animated film, Seth Rogen and Goldberg tell the story about the grocery items in Shopwells who want to be chosen by the grocery store’s customers to live out eternity in paradise, which they have been told includes a very naughty and sex-filled afterlife. At least that’s what they think.

Seth Rogen voices Frank, a sex-driven sausage who wants to get inside the sexy hot dog bun of Brenda, played by Kristen Wiig. But in reality, Frank then discovers that there is no sweet sex-filled afterlife. Instead, the food is brutally consumed by people.

So Seth Rogen’s character has the mission to warn his fellow grocery items about the brutal reality. The Neighbors actor admitted that it was difficult getting the project completed. In particular, it was tough to find a movie company who would agree to make the “f***-filled” animated film.

But then Sony, which has produced many Seth Rogen movies, agreed to make Sausage Party. In his interview with the Daily Beast, Rogen revealed that he had thought it wouldn’t be that difficult to make the film happen.

“What’s funny is every meeting ended with me thinking they were going to make it. It’s a response we’ve had before of, ‘This is amazing, this is great. We can’t make this.'”

Then Seth Rogen invited The Wolf of Wall Street actor and friend Jonah Hill to voice Carl, the arrogant sausage who plays the leading role in the movie. In fact, the comedic actor revealed that he and Hill first came up with the idea to make the movie back in 2006. In 2010, Seth Rogen and Hill finished the early draft of the script for Sausage Party.

“Then it took another three years from that point to get Megan Ellison to come onboard and finance it.”

But the most exciting thing for Seth Rogen during the production process was that people were very enthusiastic about making the dirty orgy-filled project. In fact, the Fight Club star Edward Norton was so enthusiastic about it that he would even bring it up to everyone in his conversations, and even seemingly serious people like the Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu were excited about the project, according to Paste Magazine.

Seth Rogen also admitted that Iñárritu didn’t get the plot of the film at first, and Norton had to explain it to him during a dinner party.

“Jonah was like, man, this is one of the most surreal conversations I’ve ever witnessed taking place in my entire life!”

But the most controversial, and let’s face it — highly-anticipated — scene in Sausage Party, is when the food products have a dirty orgy together. In that two-and-a-half minutes long sequence, the grocery items have sex with one another in every position possible. But Seth Rogen revealed that they had initially planned to make that scene eight minutes long.

“We told the animators to go f***in’ bonkers, and then we had to scale it back a lot to a place where it was consumable.”

Seth Rogen also added that if that orgy involved real people it would never have been shown in theaters or even on Netflix. The comedic actor also added that he was shocked by the lack of censorship in the modern world’s movies.
