Fredrik Eklund’s Husband Is Excited About Growing The Family

Fredrik Eklund really struggled on the previous season of Million Dollar Listing: New York, as he learned that he and his husband, Derek Kaplan, had gone through another failed surrogate attempt. Eklund really wanted to have a child of his own, but after two failed attempts, he was ready to give up. The first time around, he learned that he was having twins, but the surrogate miscarried close to the second trimester mark. Now, Derek Kaplan, Fredrik’s husband, is speaking out about seeing Fredrik in a father role, as he is now the stepfather to his son, Kai. Kai was born when Derek donated sperm to a lesbian couple back in London about 7 years ago.

According to a new Bravo report, Fredrik Eklund is actually embracing his new father role, if you ask his husband. Kaplan only sees his son a few times a year because he lives in London full-time, but he is embracing his role as a biological father to the max.

“It is very difficult not seeing my son grow up close to me, but I knew from the beginning that I would have to make that trade in order to have him as a single man living alone in London,” Fredrik Eklund’s husband revealed to Bravo’s Daily Dish in an exclusive interview.

Derek and Eklund met during a trip to Greece and they fell in love. At the time, Kaplan was living in London and Fredrik Eklund was naturally working as a real estate agent in New York. The two of them made it work long distance, but Derek eventually packed his bags and moved to New York. They are now married and trying to start a family, but that means that he doesn’t get to see his son as much as he would like.

“I did not anticipate moving to New York and being so far apart. I always block time off throughout the year and try to involve my parents for short holidays with him and Fred. It’s about trying to create some good lasting memories as a kid from him to remember me by so that he knows I was there for him regardless of distance,” Derek added. “It’s hard, but it gets easier because we spend more and more time together. And you know Fred, he is so adventurous and loves to travel so it makes it easier. All Fred talks about now is to plan the next trip to see Kai … So, that warms my heart. Everything happens for a reason.”

When Million Dollar Listing New York ended, Fredrik Eklund didn’t seem too eager to continue with the surrogate route. While Derek was more than willing to try again and didn’t feel so devastated, Eklund was saddened and felt that the whole thing wouldn’t work out. But Kaplan is excited about the future, because he’s convinced that the couple will have a baby of their own so Kai can get a sibling.

“And now when Fredrik is Kai’s father, too, everything has fallen in its perfect place. Actually, there is one last thing I can’t wait to see: the day Kai gets to greet his new brother and sister from us,” Fredrik Eklund’s husband explained during the interview.

It is possible that Eklund is keeping the baby journey secret from fans these days, as he doesn’t want to deal with the public if something goes wrong. According to EnStarz, these two aren’t slowing down despite their losses with the surrogate. They recently bought a mansion in Connecticut and they have been spending time out there this summer.
