Konami Announces First Post-Kojima ‘Metal Gear Solid’ Game At Gamescom
Konami just officially announced their first post-Hideo Kojima Metal Gear Solid game, as they have announced that Metal Gear Survive will be coming out for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at some point next year.
The game will be set directly after the events of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, and it will feature members of Militaires Sans Frontières who were not killed after the attack on Mother Base, who get sucked through a wormhole into an alternate universe, where they’ll be forced to battle a force of zombies, and at least one Metal Gear. You can check out the game’s official reveal trailer below.
So far, the announcement of the game has received a lot of backlash from fans of the series, mostly because Konami is deciding to continue on with the series without its mastermind, Hideo Kojima, who was of course let go by the company following the release of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain last year.
It appears that Big Boss, who was the game’s protagonist during this set period, won’t be in the game at all, other than in the intro, which is just a replay of the final scene from Ground Zeroes.
Tomotada Tashiro, Konami’s European President, had the following to say about the project in a recent press release:
“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements, but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

The announcement of Metal Gear Survive did come as a bit of a shock to most people, because nobody was expecting Konami to carry on with the series this soon after Kojima’s departure.
Wow… Didn't see #MetalGearSurvive coming at all… Looks like it could be a cool game but it sure comes across like milking/ruining MG ?

It’s also unclear if any of the Snake clones or other Metal Gear Solid characters will appear at all in Metal Gear Survive.
Konami revealed the details of the game, saying that it will be a four-player co-op game, where players will be using new weaponry to fight off enemies. It’s also been described as “survival done the Metal Gear way.” Konami has also refereed to the zombies in the game as “biological threats”, and they also mentioned that players would need to team up in order to take down “massive threats”, which could end up being the Metal Gear that was teased at the end of the game’s trailer.
Judging from the trailer, it appears that players will need to scavenge for resources from the destroyed Mother Base parts, which were also sucked into the alternate universe through the aforementioned wormhole.

Metal Gear Survive will use the Fox Engine, which powered both Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. So, it seems that that Survive’s gameplay will be on the level of both installments of Metal Gear Solid V, at the very least.
With the exception of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has always been extremely story-heavy, but it’s unclear if Survive will be a story-heavy game, or if it’ll be all about surviving, and creating your own, unique journey.
Players will likely be able to fully customize their own character, which means that the game won’t have a main protagonist, as you will be the hero of the game.
Konami is taking a huge chance by releasing a Metal Gear game without Hideo Kojima, and, as previously mentioned, they’re getting a ton of heat for it. But, this is probably their way of trying to prove that they don’t need Kojima to be able to produce a Metal Gear title.
