Die Antwoord Accuses ‘Suicide Squad’ Of Stealing Their Style

South African rap duo Die Antwoord is claiming that Suicide Squad jacked their signature style. The controversial hip-hop group is lashing out at the movie’s director, David Ayer on Instagram.

Yolandi Visser and Ninja, the voices behind Die Antwoord, took to Instagram to air their frustrations about the film. They said they spoke to Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto, who play Enchantress and the Joker in the film, and incorporated some of the elements of the Die Antwoord style into their own characters. Then, Ninja had to “sit thru dat hole bulls*** movie” with Ayer.

Visser claims that both Leto and Delevingne told her Ayer wanted to talk to her about having Die Antwoord on set, but that he “never asked our permission to rip us off.”

But, it was Yolandi who took to Instagram to first point out the similarities. She posted a clip that showed the Joker’s tattoos and haircut looked similar to Ninja’s. Yolandi also made note of the similarities in makeup and accessories between her and Harley Quinn’s look.

As High Society reported, this could be Die Antwoord’s attempt to make headlines once again. The group stirred up controversy back in 2012 with their music video, “Fatty Boom Boom,” which featured one of them painted in blackface and a Lady Gaga lookalike being killed off. A few years later, they both argued that the singer copied Visser’s signature haircut with blunt bangs.

This is also the same group who attacked Lady Gaga when she offered them the chance to go on tour with her.

After the video’s release, Gaga posted on Twitter, “i fink u freaky but you don’t have a hit. hundred thousands tickets sold in SA. #thatsmys**t,” a reference to Die Antwoord’s Youtube hit song “I Fink U Freeky” and her sold-out shows in Johannesburg and Cape Town in South Africa, according to Billboard.

She continued to write, “i guess its not a good idea to tell someone you’re a fan. never mind! we get it, you’re not a little monster. WE GOT IT.”

Die Antwoord, snapped back, writing, “lady… even tho u r ‘larger’ than us… we still cooler than u… plus we don’t have prawns in our private…”

But, according to a report via Verge Campus, Die Antwoord is more than just a controversial rap group who makes controversial remarks and strange music videos. The group recently spoke to the outlet about their signature style, which is inspired by the South African counter-culture movement called Zef.

“It’s associated with people who soup their cars up and rock gold and s***. Zef is, you’re poor but you’re fancy. You’re poor but you’re sexy, you’ve got style,” Visser said.

The singer also fought back to the accusations that she wore blackface in the music video. She insists that she has no clue what people are talking about.

“We don’t even know what blackface is,” she claimed. “Ninja painted my face black for the video as part of our visual idea to illustrate an inter dimensional bridge between the color filled streets and the pitch black voodoo-room in the video.”

Ayer has not responded to Die Antwoord’s claims that he jacked their style. It’s obvious that the movie is inspired by a mixture of punk rock and Hot Topic looks. But to say that it was directly inspired by Die Antwoord is still anyone’s guess. This latest hit comes after the movie was slammed by poor reviews from moviegoers and movie critics alike.

Die Antwoord just announced that they’re releasing their fourth album, Mount Ninji and Da Nice Time, next month. Suicide Squad is currently in theaters now. You can check out both to see where the film got its inspiration from.
