Hillary Clinton Vs Donald Trump: Polls Give Clinton 7 Point Lead Following A Number Of Trump Controversies

Hillary Clinton now has a 7.7 point lead over Donald Trump in a compilation of national polls, putting her well on course to win the presidency in November. The Democratic candidate is soaring above the Republican alternative following a number of controversies surrounding Donald Trump. Such controversies have prompted alarm within the Republican party and haven’t gone unnoticed by voters, with Clinton now holding a never before seen lead over Donald Trump in national polls.

According to the Financial Times, Trump and Clinton were on a level playing field as of late July. However, that’s all changed in the past couple of weeks. The shift in opinion around Donald Trump largely comes from Republican voters, with 19 percent feeling that Donald Trump should stand down as their nominee. However, whilst Trump is still the party’s nominee, many of those voters plan to cast their ballot for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, giving her a now serious polling advantage.

Trump’s drop in polling of late is attributed to a number of controversial moments out on the campaign trail. However, it was a speech on Tuesday night that appeared to be the turning point for Trump’s campaign, as he suggested that Second Amendment supporters might be able to stop Clinton making her Supreme Court nominations if she were to be elected.

The comments were widely received as Donald Trump endorsing violence against his opponent and have been met with widespread condemnation. Trump addressed his crowd saying “Hillary wants to abolish — essentially abolish the Second Amendment. If she gets to pick her judges, there’s nothing you can do folks. Although the Second Amendment people maybe there is, I don’t know. But I tell you what, that will be a horrible day if Hillary gets to put her judges in.” His speech later caused something of a political storm.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, recent polling has led many experts to suggest that there’s now no clear path to the White House for Donald trump. Following the polling, Trump has further bolstered his claims that the election is rigged against him and is reportedly planning to skip planned debates with the Democratic candidate.

In fact, the Washington Post‘s Stuart Rothenberg already believes the presidential election has been lost and won, saying “we’ll look back and agree that the presidential election was over on August 9 … Hillary Clinton will defeat Donald Trump in November, and the margin isn’t likely to be as close as Barack Obama’s victory over Mitt Romney.” Hillary Clinton managing to secure a stronger victory than President Obama did over Mitt Romney in 2012 would definitely give her an incredibly strong mandate.

There have of course been reports that Democrats with an unfavorable view of Clinton are switching their support to Trump. However, at this stage, for every Democratic voter who switches to Trump, Clinton is believed to pick up two Republicans. Clinton now faces the very real possibility of creating a new brand of Republicans, just as Reagan did with Democrats in the 1980s.

Republican voters switching to Clinton is bolstered by the Democratic candidate now regularly receiving endorsements from key figures within the Republican party. For many within the party, the time has come to accept Donald Trump’s nomination and focus their support on making sure he doesn’t win the presidency in November.
