Benedict Cumberbatch is now recognised as one of the best actors in England. His performances in the BBC’s Sherlock have drawn such high praise that he is even nominated for an Emmy award at the event this Sunday, but he’s still yet to become a household name in the US.
That’s probably because his name is quite peculiar. I know that seems harsh but it’s true, and it’s not a slight on his considerable acting talent but more on his parents for being so foolish.
Of course, I’m not the only one to have noticed the uniqueness of his moniker. So has ABC’s late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. It might seem like an easy gag to make and some people from across the pond are criticizing Americans for being late to the party in making fun of Cumberbatch, but it’s still pretty funny.
Wanting to know if he was alone in his appreciation of the comedy value that Cumberbatch’s surname possesses he went out onto the streets of Los Angeles and asked it’s inhabitants the question : “What is a Cumberbatch?”
Unfortunately for Benedict, every answer was rather damning and almost everybody thought that it was some kind of sexual apparatus, except for a solitary Brit who correctly guessed it was connected to the movie star.
Shame on you Hollywood! You better get used to hearing his name though as Benedict is set to star in a string of big blockbuster films including Star Trek 2 . Still, if he does win an award on Sunday, expect a few titters to emanate from the acting elite once his strange name is uttered.
