‘Gotham’ Season 3: David Mazouz Discusses Bruce Wayne Doppelganger, New Trainer, And Change In Direction

Gotham Season 3 has been slowly unveiling some of its secrets for the fall premiere of this Batman before Batman show in the DCTV Universe, but not as much is known versus Arrow, The Flash, or Legends of Tomorrow is concerned. Gotham Season 2 ended on a huge cliffhanger, as Jim Gordon left the city, and Hugo Strange’s monsters were released in Gotham City. Amongst those monsters was a young man who looked just like Bruce Wayne, but obviously since it was the Season finale, no more was said. Comicbook reports that David Mazouz sat down at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 to discuss this key issue, and this is what he had to say.

“I’m playing two characters. Is he a villain though? I mean, obviously, i can’t tell you who or what or why he is.”

When trying to pry a little more information out Mazouz, as he was asked about whether the Bruce Wayne doppelganger was a member of the Court of Owls aka the behind the scenes villain of Gotham Season 3, David Mazouz’s answer was interesting. “Maybe. Possibly. My mouth is closed.” was his vague response, but Mazouz did not say “No.” In fact, David Mazouz chose to share a little more about his Season 3 Bruce Wayne doppelganger.

“What I will say is that he’s not a villain. He might turn into one, but right now he’s not a villain. He doesn’t have bad intentions. He might turn into one! This is hard for me because I don’t want to give anything away,” he said, expertly dancing around the issue.

“I will say he’s so much fun to play. Playing two characters is just amazing. You get to jump into two different bodies in the same day. It’s phenomenal.”

When this Gotham Season 2 finale moment happened, many theories came out as to who the Bruce Wayne doppelganger was, but one of Comicbook’s theories seemed the most plausible. Thomas Wayne Jr., who is more or less the DC Comics forgotten, abandoned son of Thomas and Martha Wayne, was shipped off to a mental institution for varying reasons that have been presented in DC Comics lore. Thomas Wayne Jr. was recruited and worked for the Court of Owls as well, so it adds to the likelihood of the identity of this mysterious Bruce Wayne doppelganger.

David Mazouz also discussed some new training that will be related to the events that Bruce Wayne will be dealing with in Gotham Season 3. Mazouz detailed some of the new training that he will need to know to play young Batman for this season.

“Honestly, before, a couple of years ago, nothing, zilch. I just got a trainer, actually, because the show wants me to learn some martial arts kinds of moves, so that when I have those scenes, maybe I can do a couple flips eventually, down the line. I just started, so give me a couple months! I’m doing Krav Maga mostly, but also Boxing, Jiu Jitsu, a little bit of everything.”

Gotham and Batman fans know that the character is as much or more about the mental elements of Bruce Wayne, as it is the physical attributes. With this addition to the young Bruce Wayne that David Mazouz is playing in Gotham, and the fact that this is only the young, up and coming Bruce Wayne, one wonders if this is a detour from his more mental, detective conditioning. Mazouz indicates that this is the case, and a short detour is needed for certain plot elements of Gotham Season 3.

“In season three, that’s going to take a step back. The detective work will take a step back because of something major that happens in the premiere.”

Mazouz stopped short of giving any further details, but it seems certain that this season of Gotham is sure to be very different from what fans have seen thus far.
