Sooyoung Of Girls’ Generation Thanks Park Shin Hye With Adorable Jokes Referencing Their K-Dramas After Receiving Surprise Gift
It seems this year, the Orion Cinema Network (OCN) found their “diamond in the rough” for K-dramas by having certain members of popular K-pop girl group So Nyeo Shi Dae (SNSD), better known as Girls’ Generation, play main cast roles in their series. Earlier this year, OCN enjoyed its success with Neighborhood Hero (also known as Local Hero), a K-drama featuring Yuri. Now, they are enjoying even more success with 38 Revenue Collection Unit (also known as Squad 38) which features Sooyoung.
Though Sooyoung’s K-drama, 38 Revenue Collection Unit, is doing very well, she received a bit of love from one of the most popular Korean actresses in the industry today, Park Shin Hye. After receiving her surprise gift, Sooyoung made sure to thank Park Shin Hye with adorable jokes referencing their K-dramas.
Sooyoung made it known she received the surprise gift from Park Shin Hye on her official Instagram earlier today, as reported by Soompi. In the uploaded photo, which is attached above for viewing, a huge package sits on Sooyoung’s lap. A piece of paper attached to one of the sides of the package reveals it came from Shin Hye. Sooyoung expresses her gratitude in the picture upload’s caption.
“I’m so happy after receiving a gift from Hye Jung. Keep it up! Sung Hee is cheering you on.”
The caption itself is an adorable reference to the K-dramas both Sooyoung and Park Shin Hye are starring in right now and she uses their characters’ names instead of their own. Shin Hye is playing Yoo Hye Jung in Doctors (also known as Doctor Crush), a girl who was a thug when she was younger who turned into a brilliant neurosurgeon thanks to her mentor Hong Ji Hong (Kim Rae Won). As for Sooyoung, she is playing Cheon Sung Hee, one of the tax collection officers working under Baek Sung Il (Ma Dong Seok). Continuing the adorable references, Sooyoung also wrote in the hashtags “Hye Jung, you’re paying your taxes, right?” As for the second hashtag which reads, “What could the gift be? It’s not snacks,” is possibly a personal reference.
Park Shin Hye sending Sooyoung a surprise gift may seem a bit odd for casual fans of K-dramas, but in reality, they are friends. What many may not know is that both of them, along with Yuri, graduated at the same time, back in February, from Chung Ang University. All three of them were students in the performing arts department.
As for the K-dramas both Park Shin Hye and Sooyoung are starring in, as mentioned earlier, they are extremely popular. Doctors, the K-drama Shin Hye is in, continues to grow in viewership ratings, with the Seoul National Capital Area currently above 20 percent in viewership while the nation is ranging from 17 to 19 percent. As for 38 Revenue Collection Unit, which Sooyoung is in, it has surpassed 4 percent for both the Seoul National Capital Area and the nation, numbers that are extremely good for a K-drama series that airs on a cable channel (pay channel). Usually on cable channels, the viewership is relatively smaller compared to free-to-air television or public broadcasters such as the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), or the Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS).
Doctors airs on Mondays and Tuesdays at 10 p.m. KST on SBS while 38 Revenue Collection Unit airs on Fridays and Saturdays at 11 p.m. KST on OCN. For those who do not have access to Korean channels, both of the K-dramas, Doctors and 38 Revenue Collection Unit, can be viewed depending on your region for free, with ads, on both DramaFever and Viki.
